LAST GAME:
For the second straight contest, the B-Mets
pitching staff allowed nine runs to the Trenton Thunder in
losing 9-4. Jose Sanchez notched his second quality start of
the season, going six innings giving up two runs and left in a
tie game after six innings at 2-2. However, things fell apart for
Binghamton in the seventh as the Thunder brought 11 men to
the plate and scored six runs to take an 8-2 lead. The B-Mets
fought back with two runs in the ninth, including RBI singles
from Lucas Duda and Shawn Bowman to cut things to 9-4, but
that was as close as things got. Lefty Edgar Alfronzo was hung
with the loss. He failed to get an out opening the seventh in
relief of Sanchez, allowing four runs.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:
RHP Ryan Coultas will make
his sixth start of the season this afternoon. Coultas has been
cruising as of late, winning two straight starts, including a
career-best seven innings in his last start, a 4-1 win over Portland.
He threw 87 pitches in the seven innings outing allowing
just one run on four hits and struck out a season-high five
men. For the season, the converted infielder is 2-1 with a
2.60 ERA in 27.2 innings with two quality starts of his five so
far this season. Last year he worked as reliever for St. Lucie
(High-A) and appeared in 47 games with a 4.17 ERA. He was a
utility infielder with the B-Mets in 2007. Coultas was a sixthround
pick of the Mets out of UC-Davis in the 2004 draft.
LHP Wilkins Arias is making his second start of the young
season today for Trenton. After making seven relief appearances,
Arias made his first start May 3 at New Britain, offering
up four innings of work giving allowing two runs on four hits. In
14.1 innings, Arias is 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA, walking seven
men. In 2008, he made 11 appearances in a Trenton uniform
with a 5.93 ERA and a 0-0 record. He opened the 2008 campaign
with Tampa (High-A), where he was 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA,
striking out 64 with only 14 walks in 48.1 innings. The 20-year
-old lefty was signed in June of 2005 as an international free
agent out of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
SEASON-LONG HITTING STREAK:
With an RBI single in his final
plate appearance last night, Lucas Duda extended his hitting
streak to nine games, the longest Binghamton hitting streak
this season. He is hitting .333 (12-36) during the streak and
has hits in 11 of 12 overall (.362, 17-47). Entering play today,
Duda ranks second in the Eastern League with a .438 onbase
percentage.
ON-BASE ALL THE TIME:
Shortstop Ruben Tejada has reached
base in an Eastern League-best 19 straight games. He went 1-
4 in last night’s game with a fifth-inning single to extend his
streak.
