Mack's Pre-ST 2010 Mets Prediction

Mack’s Pre-ST 2010 Prediction:

Look, let’s look at this in a new way…

Let’s say that major league baseball announces that there will be one expansion team for the 2010 season and you are the owner.

Then, the league gives you five players to start your team up with:

SS Jose Reyes, 3B David Wright, CL Fernando Rodriquez, SP Johan Santana, and CF Carlos Beltran.

Let me tell you something… beat writers in your market will already be writing stories that your team “could” be in contention for a playoff spot just because of these five players.

And, these five already represent 20% of your entire roster!

Okay…

Now, it’s time for you to pick your first player and guess who is available? LF Jason Bay. Holy smikies!

You pick Bay and you now have four all-star every day players, the best starter in baseball, and one of the best closers.

Like your team yet? Like their chances.

Guess what?

That’s it.

The rest are, “iffys”, or as I and Alec Baldwin in “Glengarry Glen Ross” said, “steak knives”.

How do I define “iffy”?

“If” Daniel Murphy maxes out… “if” Luis Castillo duplicates 2009… “if” the three-headed catching monster sells their soul to the devil… “if” Jeff Francoeur plays like he did in Georgia high school… you get the picture.

At this point in the non-season, it simply can’t be determined where the Mets will finish, but after both Atlanta’s and Philadelphia’s FA acquisitions, and one more maturity year of the Marlins rotation, you have to be thinking fourth place right now.

And…

Watch out in 2011 and 2012… the Nats might have the best rotation in baseball.

4th place. It is Spring hope is eternal. How about 88 wins and a fight for the wild card.

Mack,

I get your point about the iffs. Only, every team has 'em?

Your point hwowever, our division rival, Philies, and crosstown rival, Yankees, have a whole lot less.

I don't mind Francoeur. He's still young, so his bat can develop/return to form. Has a rocket arm for the deep, deep Citi Field.

I can't stand, Castillo's iffy knees and iffy glove standing on second! I would have eatin the contract and signed Orlando Hudson. His bat, speed and most importantly glove would have helped this team - especially our rotation! Cheap - $6 Million.

Speaking of helping the rotation, I can't believe Mets have zillions locked up in worthless iffy arms, when the could unlock that potential with a solid game caller, like Bengie Molina, behind the plate. I mean the guy's proven himself cathching with youngsters Lincecum and Cane, plus mentored rookie catcher phenom, Buster Posey... not to mention adding another bat with pop. And, he was cheap. He was dropping years and dollars faster than a sailor on leave drops his pants.

I'm fine with the platoon at first place. Let's see what Murphy can do 'til my boy (Arizona State Alum) comes up. Honestly, I'm just too disgusted Wilpon wouldn't sign off on Orlando and Molina to complain here or the rotation.

Finally, I would like to add that as long as Wilpon meddling kid, Jeff, is playing doctor with our medical staff we'll have record tying 19 on the DL and listening to someone named John Ricco talk about our star center fielder going under the knife a month before pitchers and catchers report.

As long as Jeff Wilpon, handcuffs Omar Minay with an paint-by-numbers sign of approval autonomy, then it's up to Jerry Manual and these six All Stars as well as a bunch of iffs to get it done.

Personally, I don't think it's great way to sell seats at the ol' ball park. They're so cheep they cost themselves the full return on investment their young rotation, prospects and ball park.

Fire Wilpon!

I predict without emotion... and have predicted the last three years of missing the playoffs.

As of this point, before ST opens, and no one has picked up a bat or thrown a pitch, this is the best I can predict.

However...

if... well, you get the picture
