B-Mets GM Torch Passed

The Binghamton Mets announced today that assistant GM Jim Weed will assume the position of general manager in early March replacing Scott Brown, who departs to take over as the GM of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Weed, a 14-season veteran of the team, moves up after serving as the assistant GM for the past five seasons. The SUNY Cortland graduate first interned with the B-Mets during his senior year in 1996. A year later, the team promoted him to its Director of Business Operations.

A native of Canisteo in western New York, Weed takes the reigns of a team that posted its second-best composite attendance in any five-year span of the B-Mets 18-year history. The team has attracted 1,098,796 fans to regular season home games in the past five seasons, just 5,992 shy of the inaugural five-year total from 1992 through 1996.

“I’m excited about the new opportunity to lead the ballclub,” Weed, 36, remarked. “We have a veteran staff, fantastic corporate support, loyal fans and a fun-filled atmosphere at NYSEG Stadium. We all want to continue the tradition of affordable family entertainment and showcase the team to more and more people each season.”

Brown, 44, leaves the B-Mets after 13 seasons in Binghamton, the past five as GM. Highlights of Brown’s tenure included the second highest, regular-season fan turnout (2007: 230,053) that trails only the team’s first season in the record book. The Eastern League bestowed its “Executive of the Year” award on him in 2005 as a reflection of excellence in overall operation of the Binghamton franchise.

“It’s extremely difficult to leave the many friends of the team and my family that we have enjoyed,” said Brown, who will start his new position in early March. “My gratitude to colleagues, fans and sponsors is boundless. With supportive local ownership and a first rate front office led by Jim Weed, the B-Mets will continue to grow in popularity for many seasons to come.”
