Ruben Tejada, Scott Schafer, Mike Jacobs, Citi Field... and Kris Benson

Ruben Tejada:

SS, Mets - At 19, this Panamanian prospect batted .289, hit five homers and stole 19 bases for Class AA Binghamton (N.Y.). This year, at 20, he might be good enough to provide depth for starting shortstop Jose Reyes. Although the Mets also have Alex Cora and Anderson Hernandez, don't be surprised if they promote Tejada to get an idea of just how ready he is to help. - link

Scott Schafer:

RHP, Memorial HS (TX), #184 Overall: Schafer was a stereotypical prep arm, with fine stuff but little refinement. He was really expected to bypass signing, as he was projected as a possible pick in the teens. The Mets jumped on him much earlier than was expected. Following players selected: Justin Jacobs, Jeff Christy, Dan Brauer. Signing bonus: $140,000. - link

Mike Jacobs:

I am surprised it took so long to dawn on me, but it seems fairly obvious that Mike Jacobs was brought in not just as potential AAA depth, but in fact will compete with Daniel Murphy for the starting job at first in Spring Training. Per John Heyman:

hes got a shot to win that job over murphy/tatis. good move by him.

In hindsight, its’ obvious the Mets would not dare to not have a veteran contingency plan to keep Murphy on his toes. Chris Carter lacks the major league pedigree to seriously compete for job, and that Evans dude doesn’t really fit the bill either. Plus, a year ago, Mike Jacobs had 32 home runs and 93 RBI’s! With that kind of resume, even Josh Gibson would be watching his back in Mets camp. - link

Citi Field:

I'm visiting New York later this month, and thought it might me nice to see around the home of the Mets. The only other time I was in the city, in November 2008, Shea and Yankee Stadiums had closed while Citi Field and New Yankee hadn't opened for business. I caught a glimpse of Shea as I drove by from the airport but that hardly counts. This time, I decided, I'd definitely make the effort.

One problem with this plan - no tours. I tried e-mailing the Mets, but they weren't forthcoming on any plans for tours nor willing to let me run wild in the building unsupervised. How hard is it really to have one or two tours a day? New York must be one of the foremost tourist destinations in the world; am I really the only one who'd like to visit a ballpark? The Yankees offer tours, but since there's really only one season of history there I think I'll give it a few more years to develop some legends (this is the seat which A-Rod hit his 600th home run into, etc. etc.) - link

Kris Benson:

The Nationals are interested in free agent right-hander Kris Benson, reports Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

The Nats have been connected to the former first-round pick over the past few weeks. The two sides plan to meet next week, after a scheduled meeting for this week was postponed due to the weather. Benson, 35, tallied an 8.46 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in just 22 1/3 innings with the Rangers last season. The team's interest in Benson likely goes beyond what he can contribute on the field, as he could be a mentor for 2009 first-round pick Stephen Strasburg - link
