Takahashi v2.0, Nick Santomauro, Gaby Hernandez, Yorvit... and Fired Writer Raises 5K to Go To ST

Hisanori Takahashi:

Is down to the Mets or Dodgers, according to a Sports Hochi report passed along by NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman. Newman suggests Takahashi will spend some time in the minors and is aiming for a chance to start. Takahashi, 35 in April, is a lefty flyball/command pitcher who can fill a swingman role. - link

Nick Santomauro:

I’m a sucker for Ivy League and Stanford ballplayers. Seriously. Well, that and Santomauro has real power, approaching MLB average. Santomauro also showed the ability to put his intelligence to work, making a nice adjustment with his hands a few weeks into the NYP League season that really helped him clean up his hand path. His arm is average, as is his range on the corners. He’s not going to be a plus defender, so his value is tied up in his bat. 2009: Santomauro hit .241/.368/.441. His six homeruns in Brooklyn is a nice accomplishment for a left-handed hitter in a ballpark where the ball does not carry to right. He’s not afraid to see a pitch or two.  link

Gaby Hernandez:

Red Sox claimed RHP Gaby Hernandez off waivers from the Mariners. Hernandez was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week. The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 5.23 ERA in 146 1/3 innings for Triple-A Tacoma in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League last season, but has a 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over six minor league seasons. - Rotoworld
Yorvit:

The Padres finalized their agreement with free agent Yorvit Torrealba yesterday after the catcher passed his physical examination. Torrealba, 31, is guaranteed $1.25 million. He will make a base of $750,000 for 2010 with a mutual option for 2011 at $3.5 million. The option includes a $500,000 buyout. A career .255 hitter over nine seasons — 8½ of which were spent in the National League West with San Francisco and Colorado — Torrealba hit .291 in 64 games with the Rockies last season. He also hit .324 after the All-Star break and .488 with runners in scoring position. However, Torrealba struggled with a sore shoulder the past two seasons and threw out only 7.5 percent of the 53 opponents who ran on him last year. Torrealba joins the Padres as the No. 2 catcher to Nick Hundley - link

Fired Writer Raises 5K to Go To ST:

Mark Zuckerman booked a six-week stay at a hotel near Viera, Fla., on Tuesday, thereby confirming his intentions to cover Washington Nationals’ spring training for the sixth consecutive season. As in previous years, Mark will be there to catalogue all those springtime rites, along with his media cohorts. He’ll be at the ballpark every morning around sunrise. He’ll pepper the manager and players with questions. He’ll probably, at some point, provide readers with an update on somebody’s visa problems. He’ll also, no doubt, write some very good stories. But for now, Mark’s trip down to Florida — and the fact that he’ll be covering the Nationals this spring — is a story all by itself. That’s because Mark is no longer representing a newspaper. All in the last week, he launched his own Web site, identified a groundswell of reader support/interest, and lastly launched a campaign to raise $5,000 for a true honest-to-goodness people’s-champion spring training reporting trip. Oh, and then he raised the money in 29 hours. Not sure what Mark thinks of this idea, but the next $5,000 should go to Dennis Quaid for the movie deal - link

-maybe I shoulda fired myself...
