The latest updates on Team USA


Team USA didn’t see the podium on Tuesday, but the hockey teams had a strong showing. The men’s team defeated Switzerland 3-1, with all three goals coming form first-time Olympians Bobby Ryan (Cherry Hill, N.J.), David Backes (Blaine, Minn.) and Ryan Malone (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Jenny Potter (Edina, Minn.) made Olympic history again by scoring her second hat trick in the women’s hockey team’s 13-0 shutout. Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) put the puck in the net twice in the second period. She also had three assists to lead the team with five points.

Evan Lysacek (Naperville, Ill.) leads the way for the U.S. men’s figure skating team. He posted a career-best score of 90.30 to finish second after the men’s free skate short program. Johnny Weir (Quarryville, Pa.) follows in sixth and Jeremy Abbott (Aspen, Colo.) in 15th. The free skate will be held on Thursday.

Sara Studebaker (Boise, Idaho) placed 46th in the women’s biathlon 10km pursuit event, posting a total time of 35:00.1. Jeremy Teela (Heber City, Utah) placed 24th in the men’s biathlon 12.5km pursuit with a time of 35:45.4.

Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) placed fifth in the women’s snowboardcross on Cypress Mountain Tuesday afternoon, while teammate Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, Utah) was 12th. The third U.S. rider, Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, Alaska), was unable to advance from the qualification round.
