Team USA Update

Johnny Spillane (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) made U.S. Olympic history by earning the first American medal in nordic combined competition, capturing the silver Sunday afternoon at Whistler Olympic Park. Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished fourth and Bill Demong (Vermontville, N.Y.) placed sixth for Team USA.

Team USA’s second medal on Sunday went to Bryon Wilson (Park City, Utah) who captured bronze in the men’s moguls competition as Alexandre Bilodeau made history, becoming the first Canadian to win Olympic gold on homeland soil.

In continuing action, Amanda Evora (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mark Ladwig (Fargo, N.D./Moorhead, Minn.) are in 10th place and Caydee Denney (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Jeremy Barrett (Venice, Fla.) are in 14th after the pairs short program competition at the Pacific Coliseum.

The opening of women’s hockey group play saw Jenny Potter (Edina, Minn.) net a hat trick and Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) score a pair of goals to lead Team USA in a 12-1 defeat over China.

Other Team USA finishes included Nancy Swider-Peltz Jr. (Wheaton, Ill.) finishing ninth in the 3000m event in long track speedskating. Jeremy Teela (Heber City, Utah) also placed ninth to lead the U.S. contingent in the men’s 10km sprint event in biathlon at Whistler Olympic Park, and Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) finished eighth to lead the U.S. effort in men’s luge singles.
