9/8/10

CUTNPASTE: - Lucas Duda, Ryan Church, Matt Lindstrom, What Has Gone Wrong... and Dillon Gee

Lucas Duda:

link  - The Mets trotted out their AAA team with players like Lucas Duda, Luis Hernandez, Chris Carter, Josh Thole and Ruben Tejeda in the lineup. Thole is now a regular with Rod Barajas traded, but poor Duda didn’t even have a picture to put on the scoreboard. With a .050 batting average I don’t think I would want my picture blasted over the scoreboard either

Ryan Church:

link  - OF Ryan Church - 3rd season of arbitration - Non-tender - Church has been non-tendered before, but it's unlikely he'll find another job again this time after the brutal showing that's been his 2010 season. A .192/.252/.318 is pretty inexplicable, although I suppose there's hope that he could still hit right-handers well, as he did for essentially his entire career coming into this season.

Matt Lindstrom:

link  - Pitching in a setup role for the first time this season, Matt Lindstrom said he doesn’t have aspirations of returning to the closer’s role by the end of 2010. “Maybe next year,” Lindstrom said. “Right now it’s not really a goal of mine, considering we only have 25 games left. I just want to be a factor.” He’s been a factor and a positive one for the Astros since returning from the disabled list Aug. 1. Brandon Lyon had taken over the closer’s role, and then the DL move was made as Lindstrom had been dealing with back spasms since before his trying week and a half. “I feel good right now especially my arm,” Lindstrom, 30, said. “That’s the best thing as far as health’s concerned is that I don’t have any problems with my arm.” In the long term he would like to be a closer, but his role as Lyon’s setup man is one to which he’s becoming accustomed to quickly

What Has Gone Wrong:

link  - If it is not one thing, then it is another. This year the Mets collapse can be accredited to pitching injuries and injuries to Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes. Beltran was only supposed to miss a month with his knee surgery but was out more than half the year. The Francisco Rodriguez blow up gave the Mets an excuse to get out of his large contract. While his ERA was still solid (2.20) there was an inconsistency to his performance. The Mets are paying a lot for Oliver Perez and not getting a lot for it. Jason Bay has had a concussion that has forced him to miss the last third of the season. Off years and large contracts from Jeff Francouer and Luis Castillo have left them obsolete in the Mets lineup. John Maine has disappeared.

Dillon Gee:

link  - Mets manager Jerry Manuel wouldn't say whether Dillon Gee would make another start with the Mets this season. Gee was fantastic in his major league debut Tuesday night against the Nationals, allowing one run on just two hits over seven innings, but it was likely just a spot-start in place of Johan Santana. "I don’t know where he is," said Manuel. "He might fall into a category where this might be it. He might fall under a category where he might get one more start." Gee threw 161 1/3 innings with Triple-A Buffalo this season and has a history of arm problems, so the Mets could look to limit his work to the bullpen moving forward.
