Game 2 - Savannah 6 - Hagerstown 2 -Series: 2-2
The Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Hagerstown Suns 6-2 Tuesday night to even the best-of-five South Atlantic League Championship Series 1-1. After a travel day Wednesday, the series shifts to Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah for games three and four Thursday and Friday nights. If necessary, game five will be Saturday evening in Savannah.
The Gnats scored the game’s first runs with a three-run second inning. After three straight walks, C Jeff Glenn doubled up the right-centerfield gap to bring home two runs and chase Hagerstown starter Austin Voth from the ballgame. Philip Evans then celebrated his 21st birthday with a sacrifice fly to right to bring home the innings’ third score to put the Gnats up 3-0.
Savannah increased its advantage to 5-0 with two runs in the fifth inning. Dilson Herrera walked to leadoff the inning and then scored on Cole Frezel’s double into right field. Frenzel came around to score on Glenn’s double up the right-centerfield gap.
Glenn finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Frenzel was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Savannah starter Seth Lugo dealt with trouble in the second, third and fifth innings, but forced the Suns to strand two runners in each frame. The 23-year-old tossed six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and one walk to earn the win in his first Savannah playoff start.
The Gnats added a run in the eight to make it 6-0. Eudy Pina tripled to right and scored on Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice fly to right field.
The Suns scored their only two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against reliever Paul Sewald but could get no closer than 6-2. Beck Wheeler worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish the win.
The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Gabriel Ynoa (15-4, 2.72 – regular season and 1-0, 2.35 playoffs) against RHP Kylin Turnbull (6-5, 3.58 – regular season and 1-0, 3.60 playoffs) Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The pregame show on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnat.com begins at 6:45 pm
