To probably sign no one.
This whole protect pick crap probably went out the door with the Hunter Pence $90mil extension today with his current team, the San Francisco Giants.
Sandy Alderson is not going to get into a pissing contest with Scott "Just Call Saul" Boras over Shin-Soo Choo, whose services just bumped up to the $130mil+ range.
We'll talk more about this tomorrow in 'The War Room'.

At least there's a chance to sign someone and add a top young talent. I'm not throwing in the towel just yet.
I'm pulling for the Rockies to win the next two so we can move up to the #7 pick.
This
There's been reports that the mets have no intentions to go after a top free agent...
I think those reports are complete bulls...! Listen, after Sandy struck out last year trying to trade for a good outfielder, he actually was prepared to sign Bourn for 4/48. That should tell folks that he isn't about just waiting for prospects to develop and trade proven ML taken for more prospects.
He has had a resemble approach during the last few years. He's acquired numerous top shelf prospects while waiting for horrible contracts to run out and this off season the wait is over.
I'm devastated that Pence is off the board and think his agent is insane for negotiating a pact so close to his clients free agency and a possible bidding war for his services. However, this screams of a player who wanted to stay put in what turned out to be his dream job, much like David Wright last year.
That said, there's still numerous options, and I'd bet a million bucks if I had it that Sandy is going to go out and get this team some much needed help. Legit help. Choo seems like the type I player this FO covets as if be shocked if they didn't spend a much as 75-85 million to get him. I also would dare to go any more then that on him and wouldn't be pissed if they didn't either.
There are a ton of options and trades that could be made. Sandy told the NY POST this past June, te mets will have about 55 million in commitments going into the off season and their payroll would end up at around 90-100 million. He said it. It's in writing. There's no detail missing from that statement, it's as close as you can get to what his plans are. He's going to spend.
So I don't know which source decided to say the mets wouldn't go after any big free agents, but I'm much more inclined to believe what Sandy said to a reporter earlier this year instead.
Gonna make for an interesting war room tomorrow
some names to consider off the board - Rodon - guaranteed top pick
SS Trae Turner - great public relations move to pick 1- or 1-3 with teammate Rodon
RHP SP Tyler Beede - top college pitcher by far
Anything goes after that... you know the world loves a shortstop, especially one that is 6-4 and hits for power... I expect Gatewood as one of the top 5.
It's too early to project the high school pitchers but there will be plenty of the of them.
Best player available at 8 or 9 will most probably be another RH high school starters
This FO hasn't picked a pitcher for their first rounder yet. Any really great power bats available at 10th pick?
I do not anticipate the mets drafting one of these top notch talents, I think they will reach for a good pick and spread the draft pool money around to the lower levels to help cover the loss of a 2nd and possibly 3rd round pick the will lose by signing a free agent. However, the mets may not sign much after pence and his $90 million deal. Choo is going to be asking an astronomical amount.
Please give up on duda/davis
A must to sign abreu
Trade for tulowitski
Sign free agent. Choo/rios/Cruz
Sign harang/matsusaka
3B Jack Flaherty and a bunch of high school outfielders too early to project
130 million is a joke. This is overreaction to Pence's contract. If Choo gets 130 million I will personally fund your site for the next year, Mack.
It's already been touched on here, but there are only a handful of GMs out there who A) have the resources to give Choo a contract like that and B) are willing to pay that much for a player. Of the few teams that meet this criteria, I don't see anyone but Texas who even has interest in him. I think he'll get a realistic deal....and might even be waiting until later this winter a la Bourn if he prices himself out of the market.
It looks like there is a strong possibility of the Mets, Rockies, and Phillies all ending up with 73 wins. If that happens does anyone know the tie breaker.
I was able to find it. The Rockies would draft before the Mets but the Mets would draft before the Phillies. The Mets also would draft before the Brewers if the Mets come back today and end up in a tie with the Brewers.
The tie breaker is their 2012 record.
It looked like the Brewers really didn't want to win that game. Knocked the Mets back two or three slots in the draft. We now have the 10th pick. Much better than the 11th but I would rather have been at 7. Beede has a slim chance to be there at 7 but none at 10 unless he gets injured.
Too early to tell yet. Remember when Karston Whitsen was a consensus top five pick a la Beede? Did he even get drafted? Lots of baseball still to go and a deep draft. We'll get a five star prospect and it's great that it's protected.
