Binghamton 6 - New Hampshire 0

Greg Peavey tossed his first career nine-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Binghamton Mets past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Peavey surrendered just two singles to help the B-Mets snap a four-game losing streak.

Brian Burgamy put Binghamton on the board in the third. Following back-to-back singles from Xorge Carrillo and Kyle Johnson, Burgamy launched a 2-1 pitch from New Hampshire starter Casey Lawrence over the right-field wall. The B-Mets infielder threaded his fifth home run of the season inside the foul pole to give Binghamton a three-run lead.

The three runs were plenty for Peavey. The right-hander put down the first 11 Fisher Cats he faced before surrendering a two-out single to Andy Burns in the fourth. Peavey shook off the hit and posted a shutout inning before working around another two-out single in a scoreless fifth inning.

Binghamton added to their lead against Lawrence in the sixth. Jayce Boyd laced a single up the middle, his sixth hit of the series, to start the rally. Two batters later, Dustin Lawley bounced a two-out double off the base of the left-field wall, plating Boyd with the B-Mets’ fourth run.

Given a four-run cushion, Peavey continued his cruise through the Fisher Cats’ lineup. He needed just 12 pitches to hurl a perfect sixth and burned through the heart of the Fisher Cats order with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Cory Vaughn padded Binghamton’s lead with authority in the eighth. With two outs and a runner on, Vaughn launched his first home run of the season to centerfield, clearing the 30-foot-high batter’s eye to give Binghamton a 6-0 lead.

Peavey went back to work and posted a perfect eighth inning. Nearing his pitch limit, the righty returned for the ninth. He retired Aaron Munoz on one pitch to start the inning and fanned Jon Berti for the second out. Kevin Nolan lifted Peavey’s 100th pitch of the afternoon down the right-field line. Vaughn snagged the fly in foul territory, securing the gem.

Peavey (2-1) gave up just two hits and struck out six in his second consecutive win. He never allowed any Fisher Cat to get past first base. Lawrence (2-3) was tagged for four runs on seven hits over 6-2/3 in the loss.

It was the first nine-inning, complete-game shutout for a B-Met since Mark Cohoon blanked the Harrisburg Senators on August 10, 2012.

Great to see for Peavey. Boyd goes from ice cold to red hot. Nice.
