Herb G - Mets Minor League Report - Supplemental: Month End Summary

After about one month of the minor league season (May 2) all four Mets’ full season farm teams have winning records. It’s been a good month.

Las Vegas is leading the PCL with a 20-9 .690 record. They are 4.5 games ahead in their division (Pac South) and their W-L Pct is 113 points better than their nearest competitor in the PVL, the Iowa Cubs. In a pitcher centric farm system, Las Vegas is doing it with hitting. Their .855 team OPS is a league best, due primarily to the #1 team OBP in the league (.394) and their team SLG of .461, #2 in the league. Their pitching, although not as dominant as their offense, is nothing to be sneezed at. Their team ERA of 4.07 ranks 5th in the 16 team PCL.

Offensive standouts in the first month for Las Vegas, are Allan Dykstra
(.338/.495/.620/1.115) and Eric Campbell (.333/.414/.504/.918) both of whom, with 23 RBI, are tied for 6th in the PCL. Dykstra’s 1.113 OPS is 3rd in the league. Also off to fine starts, are potential reserves for late season call ups, Anthony Seratelli and Taylor Teagarden, while highly regarded prospect, Cesar Puello has not yet gotten into gear. On the pitching side, starter Jacob deGrom (ERA 1.89, WHIP 1.17) has been positively outstanding, while reliever, Joel Carreno (ERA 2.92, WHIP 1.05) is making a case for a call to Flushing soon.

Binghamton’s 14-11 .560 is good for 3rd place, 2.5 games back, in the 6 team Eastern Division of the EL. (If they were in the Western Division, they would be only ½ game behind.) Despite their good record, they are squarely in the middle of the pack in pitching stats (6th of 12 in ERA, 7th in WHIP) while their team batting average (.264) is good for 3rd, and their .724 OPS ranks 4th in the 12 team league.

Binghamton’s offense is being led by a couple of Matts; Matt Clark
(.338/.415/.625/1.040) and Matt Reynolds, (.337/.414/.395/.809) while prospects Wilfredo Tovar, (off to a surprisingly hot start) Darrell Ceciliani and Kevin Plawecki are fulfilling the Mets’ high expectations for them. As previously mentioned, pitching has not been a strong spot for Bingo, but relievers John Church and Cody Satterwhite have been outstanding.

St. Lucie, 15-13 .536. Is tied for 2nd in the FSL South. Usually known for strong pitching, it is their pitching that is holding them back this year so far. They lead the league in virtually all offensive categories. Their .787 team OPS leads the FSL, 48 points better than their nearest competitor. They are also running away from the rest of the league in AVG, (.289) OBP, (.366) SLG, (.421) HR, (21) RBI, (150) R, (159) and BB. (108) They have the two top hitters in the league in T.J. Rivera (.408/.450/.612/1.062) and Brandon Nimmo. (.371/.500/.4495/.995) Unfortunately, their team ERA (4.61) and WHIP (1.41) rank near the bottom. With some logical promotions from Savannah at mid season, their fortunes could dramatically improve.

Speaking of Savannah, with a 18-8 .692 record, the Sand Gnats lead the Southern Division of the SAL. (Hagerstown’s 20-7 .742 is the only team in the league with a better record.) Finally, we have a team in the Mets’ system that dominates with their arms. Like St. Lucie’s offense, Savannah’s pitching leads in many categories. They are first in ERA, (2.41, 43 points better than #2) WHIP, (1.18) runs allowed, (77) Hrs, (5) hits, (191) second in strikeouts (255) while their 78 walks rank 4th. Savannah’s batting is somewhat cooler, with a team AVG (.241) that ranks 4th from the bottom, although their OPS, (.696) OBP, (.327) SLG, (.369) HR, (15) and R, (120) are decidedly middle of the pack in the 14 team league. Pitching standouts thus far are starters Robert Gsellman (1.48 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) and Robert Whalen (1.80 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) and relievers Dario Alverez, (0.78 WHIP) Akeel Morris (0.89 WHIP) and Robert Coles, (1.03 WHIP) none of whom have been scored upon yet this year.
