5/5/14

May 5, 2014 -- Marlins 4, Mets 3

Casey McGehee hit a RBI single that ricocheted off Gonzalez German with one out and 2 on in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Marlins come from behind and beat the Mets 4-3. Behind an amazing outing by Jon Niese the Mets built a 3-0 lead. They got to Marlins starter Nate Eovaldi for 2 quick runs on long homers by Daniel Murphy (1) and Curtis Granderson (3) to make it 2-0 Mets.   In the top of the 3rd Bobby Abreu hit a sac fly to score David Wright from third to score their 3rd run.  Niese left after 7 innings and 108 pitches. In the 8th Daisuke Matsuzaka came on and just didn’t have it. He walked the first two batters to face him and then let up an RBI single by Giancarlo Stanton to make it 3-1. McGehee then hit a liner to short that Omar Quintanilla flubbed as it bounced off the end of this mitt and into left field to score the second run. Jarred Saltalamacchia then doubled to right center to tie the game at 3. Kyle Farnsworth then came in with no outs and managed to retire the side with no more damage.  In the bottom of the 9th, Chris Yelich led off with a single off Scott Rice. The call was made for Germen to come in. After a sac and an intentional walk to Stanton,  McGehee hit a scorcher up the middle that caromed off Germen and into right field allowing Yelich to score with the game winner.  Niese gets nothing to show for an outstanding effort. He went 7, allowing just 5 hits, while walking one and striking out 6.  His ERA falls to a scant 1.82 on the year. Wright and Granderson both had 2 hits on the night. Granderson’s average is now up to .185, when the Mets started this road trip he was batting .129. Juan Legares, who came in the game for Abreu for defensive purposes in the bottom of the 7th popped up in the top of the 9th thus, snapping his 13 game hitting streak.  The Mets now stand at 16-15 on the year and 8-7 on the road. Tuesday night is game 2 of the series. Bartolo Colon (2-4  5.65) goes for the Mets, Henderson Alvarez (1-2  3.28) goes for Miami.

Any fan that think the 2014 Mets can even think about contending needs to reevaluate their expectations until the bullpen is overturned. You cannot continue to give big outs to washed up pitchers. How many games have Valverde, Farnsworth, and Dice-K cost us now? When will this end? I'd rather see deGrom, Familia, Black, Thornton get torched than watch old relievers walk the ball park. Sick of this.

What ever happened to pitchers, with an 0-2 count, throwing it in the dirt, and/or throwing it.......well.....anywhere other than down the middle of the plate.

He definitely missed his spot. Recker wanted it eye level. Germen's money is his change so i'm with you..i wanted a change in the dirt.

Real problem was Dice-K and TC leaving him in about 20 pitches too long.

Is Collins the worst manager in all of baseball? Probably not. But a lot of his deciscions makes me sick. Why in the hell does he always bench hitters who starting to get hot!? Ok maybe someone need a break but com on Lagares was 2 weeks injured, he is ready to start. And his dArnaud juggling is NOT working either. This kid has about 160 at bats in his career and is starting to get hot...what should you do?! Bench him every 2nd or 3rd day that his rythym get lost. I think about his bullpen moves we havent to talk. What me wonders is that terry has so much expirience but you just cant find it in his moves.

Maybe I overreacted a little but these losses are so tough to watch. And its so hard to understand why this FO just didnt invest into the pen. Latest example..joel hanrahan
