St. Lucie 5 - Charlotte 2

Gabriel Ynoa rebounded from three consecutive subpar outings to limit the Charlotte Stone Crabs to two runs over six innings as the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Stone Crabs 5-2 on Monday at Charlotte Sports Park.

Ynoa was roughed up by the Crabs for nine hits and seven runs in just 4 2/3 innings last Tuesday at Tradition Field. Monday was a different story. Ynoa pitched out of jams in the second and third inning, then settled in to give the Mets the quality start they were looking for.

Ynoa struck out the side in the fourth, was able to strand a runner on third with less than two outs in the fifth and pitched around a two out single in the sixth. He struck out three and scattered six hits.

The Mets only totaled five hits, but they managed to manufacture key runs. Jairo Perez doubled off of Alex Colome in the second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He came home on another wild pitch by Colome later in the inning. Maikis De La Cruz added a two-out single in the frame to score Cam Maron and make it 2-0.

Charlotte scored a run in the second when Kes Carter tripled and Tyler Goeddel singled him home, but Perez would get the run back nearly on his own in the third.

Perez turned a double into a hustle triple with a late burst of speed with one out in third. Then, on Maron’s ground ball to third, Perez waited until Goeddel threw to first and took off for home. Perez beat first baseman Patrick Leonard’s throw to the plate to make it 3-1.

Josh Sale led off the bottom of the third with another triple off Ynoa and scored on a sac fly by Andrew Toles to cut the Mets’ lead to 3-2. However, that would be it for the Charlotte offense.

Ynoa avoided trouble in the rest of his outing and Paul Sewald pitched around a two out walk in the seventh.

The Mets added two insurance runs in the eighth on an Aderlin Rodriguez single and when Maron scored from third on a fielders choice.

Beck Wheeler emphatically ended the game by retiring all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth, including striking out four in a row to end the ballgame. team press release
