The Dunedin Blue Jays held off a furious ninth inning rally by the St. Lucie Mets in a 4-3 win on Monday at Tradition Field.
The Mets entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-0 but plated a run on a single by Phillip Evans and loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Jhoan Urena.
Lefty reliever Matt Dermody entered the game and exchanged two runs for two outs on a sac fly by Patrick Biondi and a RBI fielder’s choice ground out by Champ Stuart. Dermody was able to finish off the Mets by striking out Luis Guillorme to end the game with Stuart on first base.
The Blue Jays scored their first two runs on an error and a wild pitch. In the sixth inning Ryan McBroom launched a two-run homer off of Scarlyn Reyes to open up a 4-0 lead.
The Mets had a good chance to score in the seventh but Biondi lined into a double play back to pitcher Adonys Cardona with the bases loaded.
Notes: John Mora extended his hitting streak to five games…Tomas Nido went 2 for 3. He now has two hits in each of his four games…Amed Rosario stole his third base of the season…the Mets committed three errors in the first two innings after playing error-free in the previous three games…Kevin McGowan struck out five in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief…Reyes suffered the loss after allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings…Mets pitchers struck out nine batters. The pitching staff now has 48 strikeouts in 45 innings…J.D. Davis and McBroom scored all of Dunedin’s runs and had three of its five hits…The five through nine hitters in the Dunedin order went 0 for 19 with six strikeouts…Dunedin has won four straight games at Tradition Field dating back to 2015.
Next Up: The Mets (3-2, 2nd FSL South) and Dunedin (3-2) play on Tuesday at Tradition Field. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
