Hot Stove - 12-18-17
Kristie Ackert/NYDN reports that the Mets and OF Jay Bruce are negotiating a 4-year contract. Bruce first demanded a 5-yr. deal but that's changing as I type,
Newday's Mark Carig reported than any Mets/Indians deal that would include 2B Jason Kipnis have turned luke warm at best.

I'm betting it will mirror what Curtis Granderson received.
Hopefully he will have a very productive 4 years, if that is the final deal.
I like JB, but where does he play? If you don't want to block Dominic Smith and if you prefer to play Conforto in RF, that is.
Use the cash for a serious upgrade at 2B and/or 3B before you add a player who will cause a log jam on the roster.
Just Sandy being Sandy. Lets ignore the gaping hole at 3B and it will go away. By the way, for those of you that are okay with Bruce playing 1B, why are you not okay with Flores at 2B? I bet that Flores is a better 2B than Bruce will be at 1B.
Oh...its because of Bruce power potential..okay but if Flores had not gotten hurt, he would have hit at least 25hrs right? that's not enough power for 2B?
Brandon Nimmo - if he does not get hurt in the WBC last spring, he does not miss nearly 2 months of time. Maybe he makes team out of spring, or at least plays a lot more in 2017 to show if reacquiring Bruce is REALLY necessary - all to say, I would not play in the WBC and risk injury. My guess is Seth Lugo would agree.
Same with Lagares - diving is risky - he misses a ton of time, and maybe had that not happen, they would not be considering Bruce because Lagares plays more and reestablishes his worth. My advice to Lagares - be less reckless.
Bruce is not needed.
A CF is needed.
Ozuna would have been perfect.
Maybe Yellich now?
@Tom -- sorry to disagree with my colleague here, but Brandon Nimmo is not going to hit you 30 HRs nor drive in 100. He will provide a superior OBP and batting average, but with all the power traded away last year, you have to replace it somewhere. Bruce isn't necessarily my first choice (that would be Lorenzo Cain to provide speed, power, leadoff ability and defense) but that's just a pipe dream.
I like JB and he was good for the Mets, but, I agree with those who just don't see where he fits, unless they have another deal lined up right after they sign JB.
Heat up that Hot Stove, baby!
I actually agree with you, Reese, on Nimmo. Just saying he needed to maximize his 2017, but his WBC injury instead cut his chance to show what he can really do. I would have really been surprised if he made everyone think he was the solution, even if he had stayed healthy.
@TP -- it would seem they have the defensively porous alignment of Cespedes, Conforto (when healthy) and Bruce in mind. Lagares and Nimmo become the 4/5 outfielders.
For his sake, i hope he gets the fifth year when he signs with the indians or blue jays....
Mack-
Where did you find the Kristie Ackert report? I don't see it in her Twitter feed nor in her recent articles on the NYDailyNews.com Mets page.
I have said, from the get-go, that Bruce was my #1 choice for the OF addition, but only if Sandy was fully comfortable with Conforto being the starting CF when he is ready to resume full time play. If Conforto is not the guy, then I would sign Carlos Gomez, who can still give us decent speed, some pop, aand a good glove in CF until the late innings, when Lagares might come in.
Now, maybe if he is thinking of Bruce for 1B just for this year, giving Smith further time to hone his skills, that would work too. But I have this sneaky feeling that he just might sign Adrian Gonzalez for league minimum salary, as a low risk - high reward guy.
Anyone want to guess the "runs allowed" or "runs saved" differential between a CF/RF combo of 4th/Bruce and one of Lag/4to?
