Thinking Outloud...
Good first outing by Vegas' Zack Wheeler. Probably has best chance within system for first call-up to Mets, if and when needed. Just has a little rust to shake off and should happen.
Not to get too far ahead of ourselves here, this team is playing fabulous ball, but with Lugo and Wheeler showing excellent promise, Matz' start today is perhaps somewhat important.
Food for thought...Matz going to the pen if he cannot regain his prior starting form sometime soon. Which might then allow Lugo, Wheeler, and even PJ Conlon another chance to start for Mets and showcase their abilities. Mets could even go deep with a six-man if desirable. But not sure if it would be.
Sometimes these things happen. It's all good. Look at Familia as an example here. Came up to the Mets a promising starter. However, the Mets Inn was full right at that particular time. Honestly, is there a better pitcher you would want now closing out a Mets game than Familia? No.
All I am saying here is that sometimes situation and circumstance may look non-optimal for a specific pitcher, but then that pitcher accepts and adjusts to the move. As did Familia. He's superb really. Could not ask for better closing.
Also...
If we had a magic wand, wouldn't a trade between the very left-handed Red Sox and Mets' right-handed pitching staffs be something?
But in the real world...Shucks!
Zamora in AA Bing maybe?
Just need that one more lefty set-up to get eggroll. (Hmm)
My guess is Wheeler will get the first shot back in the rotation if a change is needed.
BigMack...
What do you think on the S. Matz idea, should he struggle again today, of going to a set-up role with Ramos or whichever right-hander Mets reliever would share the set-up with Matz?
I figure Syndergaard, deGrom, Harvey are solid starting already and Lutz looks like a given soon as the fourth righty. Then righty Wheeler and maybe (fingers crossed) lefty Conlon get a look soon for the fifth.
Did you watch the eight-hour Yankees/Orioles game last night? Painfully slow game. Yankees pitching not there yet. And NYK beat-up on a bad Heat team. Burke and Dotson looking like 2018/19 starters! Add in Porzingas and you have there 3.
