Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 9 - Syracuse 1

Syracuse, NY (May 3, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets opened a three-game series with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with a 9-1 loss on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Carlos Gómez had two hits for Syracuse in the game.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (13-12) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. Cliff Pennington walked with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. Pennington scored on Gosuke Katoh’s ground-ball single to right field for a 1-0 lead. 

In the second, Zack Zehner walked with one out. Billy Burns followed with a triple to right field to plate Zehner and make the RailRiders advantage two.

The game held at 2-0 until the fifth. Brad Miller hit a two-out, solo home run to right-center field to extend the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre edge to 3-0.

The RailRiders added another run in the sixth. With one out, Ryan McBroom doubled to left field. Two batters later, Mandy Alvarez singled to right field to bring across McBroom and push the lead to 4-0.

Syracuse (17-11) scored its first run in the bottom of the seventh. Luis Guillorme led off with a single, and Gómez doubled to put runners on second and third. Drew Hutchison then threw a wild pitch, allowing Guillorme to score from third, cutting the deficit to three, 4-1.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre responded in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Burns singled home Ryan Lavarnway from third base and Alvarez from second to make it a 6-1 ballgame.

The RailRiders gave themselves an exclamation mark in the ninth. Pennington led off with a single. Katoh followed with a two-run home run that pushed the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 8-1. McBroom then homered right after Katoh to give the RailRIders a 9-1 advantage.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their three-game series on Saturday night with the second game. RHP Zach Lee will be on the mound for the Mets while LHP Nestor Cortes will pitch for the RailRiders. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
