John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 8/17/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Skip Lockwood and Brooklyn Cyclones 1B Joe Genord.  Phillies 6 Mets 2 as Zack Wheeler beats his old club and MLB Celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Negro Leagues.

Mets Links:

Phillies 6 Mets 2 Nationals 1. Rick Porcello (L, 1-3) 6 innings, 10 hits, 4 runs, 4 ER, 0 walks, 6Ks, 1 HR (McCutchen 1, 6th Inning), 94 pitches – 70 strikes 5.76 ERA; Jared Hughes, 1 inning, 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER, 1 walk, 1 K; Seth Lugo 1 inning, 2 Hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 K; Zack Wheeler (W, 3-0) 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 1 walk, 4 Ks, 1 HR, 99 pitches – 65 strikes 2.81 ERA;  Luis Guillorme 1 for 2, 2 RBIs, 1 walk – now hitting .458; Robinson Cano 2 for 4, 1 run scored – now hitting .383; J.D. Davis, 2 for 4, 1 run scored; Dominic Smith 1 for 4, 1 K; Brandon Nimmo 0 for 4; Wilson Ramos 1 for 2; Andres Gimenez 0 for 3; Jeff McNeil 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter; Amed Rosario, 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.  (Box Score).

SNY.com: Robert Gsellman makes his second start of the season Monday against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m. on SNY. Jordan Yamamoto is set to toe the rubber for the Marlins.

Mets360: Rick Porcello pitched good for five innings, which sounds okay until you realize he pitched six innings. The final line wasn’t awful – 6 IP, 4 ER, 0 BB, 6 Ks – but the Mets couldn’t do much against Zack Wheeler and ended up doing even less against the Phillies’ bullpen, which was supposed to be a giant weakness for them.

Metstradamus: On Friday, Rojas pulled Walker Lockett too late and it cost them a game. On Saturday, Rojas pulled Steven Matz too late and it could have cost them that game as well. On Sunday, Rojas pulled Rick Porcello too late and the Mets lost as a result. But I can’t give Rojas too much blame here, tempting as it might be. I mean, (I would honestly rather blame Gary DiSarcina for running Andres Gimenez into an out early in the game for no reason, but that’s another conversation for another time.)

SNY.com: Porcello found his rhythm after the first inning, shutting out the Phillies in his next four frames of work. But in the sixth inning, J.T. Realmuto and Bohm hit back-to-back doubles, with Bohm's tying the game. Andrew McCutchen hit a long two-run homer to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead.

Mike Puma NY Post: Everything goes wrong for Mets in ‘unacceptable’ loss to Phillies. The Mets hit a grand slam of sorts Sunday with poor offense, pitching, defense and base running. Other than that, it was a strong performance by manager Luis Rojas’ beleaguered bunch.

Greg Prince Faith and Fear in Flushing: I’ve had one conversation with Zack Wheeler in my life. It came after his rookie season, two years after the Giants had traded him to the Mets for two months of Carlos Beltran. When I asked him about that July 2013 game — seven three-hit innings, one run allowed, plus his first double and RBI en route to a fairly easy win over San Francisco — he didn’t mask his spiteful glee from having reminded them who they gave up on when he was merely a minor leaguer. Zack smiled and told me he really wanted to “shove it against ’em”.

NBC Sports.com: Roman Quinn placed on injured list after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Roman Quinn, whose slide at home won the game for the Phillies Friday night against the Mets, was placed on the injured list Sunday morning. Quinn exhibited minor symptoms of COVID-19 on Sunday morning. He woke up with a sore throat and an earache, according to manager Joe Girardi. Three contact tests came back negative. Out of an abundance of caution, the Phillies told Quinn to stay home.

Mike’s Mets I’ve lost that loving feeling. “The Mets have had a few tough breaks this year, but I'm told that there are some teams that actually manage to overcome bad luck and delight their fans by being scrappy and exceeding expectations. Not the Mets. Think of Rocky Balboa, crumpled in a ball at the bottom of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, moaning and feeling sorry for himself, the melancholy strain of Gonna Fall Now playing in the background. That's the Met version of that classic.”

213 Mile from Shea Game Preview Mets @ Marlins.

Mike Puma NY Post: Jacob deGrom uncertainty leaves Mets rotation in flux. “The Mets ace, who was scratched from his last start with neck tightness, played catch before his team’s 6-2 loss to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, but manager Luis Rojas later couldn’t conclusively say if deGrom will pitch against the Marlins. Jacob deGrom would likely have to throw a side session Monday to be in play for his Wednesday start.”

1968
After four tries, the Mets still haven't scored a run when Jim McAndrew starts a game with their 1-0 loss to Houston at Shea Stadium. In his first four major league appearances, the 24 year-old rookie right-hander has a puny 1.82 ERA, but is 0-4 due to the team dropping two 2-0 and two 1-0 decisions.
1969
The Mets sweep a doubleheader from the Padres for the second consecutive day, beating San Diego 3–2 in both ends of the Shea Stadium twin bill. Yesterday, behind solid starts by Tom Seaver and Jim McAndrews, the Amazins’ beat the Friars respectively, 2-0 and 2-1.

1973
At Shea Stadium, 42 year-old Willie Mays hits his 660th and final home run of his career off Cincinnati southpaw Don Gullett. The Mets first baseman, who played 21 seasons roaming the outfield for the Giants before coming home to New York last season, is third on the all-time home run career list behind Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (703).
2014
Michael Cuddyer is the 30th player to hit for multiple cycles, but becomes only the third player to accomplish the feat in both the American and National League, joining Bob Watson (Astros, 1977, and Red Sox, 1979) and John Olerud (Mets, 1997, and Mariners, 2001). The rare baseball occurrence is completed with an eighth inning double off Reds reliever Manny Parra, who yielded three of the hits in the outfielder's first cycle in 2009, pitching for the Brewers in a game against the Twins.

1973 - At Shea Stadium, 42-year old New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays hits the 660th and final home run of his career off Reds lefty Don Gullett. Third-string catcher Hal King belts a pinch-hit homer in the top of the 10th inning giving Cincinnati a 2 - 1 victory.

1982 - Cincinnati's Mario Soto fans 15 Mets in a 9 - 2 victory to raise his league-leading strikeout total to 209. Soto walks none. He will finish the season with 274 strikeouts, second only to Steve Carlton's.

2010: The Mets place closer Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list and will not pay him until he is able to pitch again. He suffered a season-ending thumb injury punching his father-in-law last week, an action for which he faces criminal assault charges. The Mets may still try to void the last year of his contract as well, worth $11.5 million, although such a decision would be certain to be contested by the Players union.

Welcome back, Johnny boy. Having me fill in for you in the AM is like having Thor replaced by Porcello.

My brother bellowed bout Mets' stupidity about 1) not signing Wheeler 2) letting him go to a division rival. He said that at the time, by the way.

As my bro so often is about this team, he was right.

Without new ownership. we will NEVER win.

Yanks showing how it is done. Mets showing how it is not done.

Phillies looked at the Mets and saw a demon-possessed squad, which is why, I guess the Phils scored 6-6-6.

Yanks have done what they do all season without Chapman, but he is back today. I wonder if that will help? OK, I just stopped wondering.

I just realized Jake rhymes with break. He breaks, the Mets' franchise will quake.

I hope Pete enjoyed observing the blue laws in taking his Sunday off.
