John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 1/10/2021

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Kelvin Torve, Jim Lindeman, and Kevin Baez.  Juan Lagares goes deep in Winter Ball, and No to Francisco Alvarez kills a Kris Bryant trade.

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, Winter Baseball, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

Joel Sherman NY Post: What separates Francisco Lindor trade from last Mets blockbuster. “The Mets took on a far greater financial obligation in Robinson Cano than in Carrasco, while getting a lesser piece in Diaz than in Lindor and also giving up a far more desirable trade chip in Jarred Kelenic than in Andres Gimenez.”

NY Post: Francisco Lindor embraces Mets history in first sign of his excitement.

Mike Puma NY Post: The mega-deal it might take to keep Francisco Lindor with Mets. “The Post surveyed agents, baseball executives and insiders Friday…it would take a 10-year commitment to sign Lindor…The average of all guesstimates suggested a $320 million windfall, taking Lindor from 2021 to 2030.”

Bill Madden NY Daily News talked about the Lindo trade saying: “Conceivably, the 27-year old Lindor is going to command a 9-10 year contract of nearly $300 million, although if I were Cohen I’d still wait to see Lindor play some this season… Springer, who’s 31, is said to be looking for a similar deal…better that Cohen spend his remaining “under the threshold” money this winter on more needed pitching and perhaps a far cheaper defensive center fielder like Jackie Bradley Jr…’What I’d like to know,’ said one scout, ‘is how do the Indians make this trade without Dominic Smith in it?’”

MLB.com: What will it take to land Springer this offseason? According to SNY's Andy Martino, around $175 million.

Prime Time Sports Talk: Why the Mets Should Avoid George Springer After Francisco Lindor Trade. A cheaper center field option allows for more additions elsewhere.

Mike Lupica NY Daily News: The Mets won something this week, for the first time in a long time. They won one and Baseball New York won one when Sandy Alderson swung his big deal for Frankie Lindor, who might turn out to be this winter’s Mookie Betts, just on this side of the country and the Mets side of the city.

Mets360: Steve Cohen puts his stamp on the latest “new Mets”.

Newsday: Consistent Carlos Carrasco gives Mets another solid starter. “Carrasco averaged more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings in his last four seasons, including that 2019 comeback year. In 2017, he went 18-6 and came in fourth in the American League Cy Young Award voting.”

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets’ Francisco Lindor move can join pantheon of New York sports’ top trades.

SNY.TV: Mets and Cubs’ Kris Bryant trade talks ended weeks ago.

Rising Apple: Kris Bryant for Francisco Alvarez is a deal-breaker.

Metsmerized Online: Guillorme And Davis Slated To Compete For Third Base Role.

SNY.TV: Mets reportedly planning to use Seth Lugo out of the bullpen in 2021. Right-hander has had much more success as a reliever than a starter throughout his career.

That is a great graphic on over 30 hitters. They often go into decline. It could happen to Springer within a few years. Spend accordingly.

Lagares looked good, some team could be interested.

But we have D Rod.

I would much rather keep JD Davis and play him at 3rd than lose Francisco Alvarez in a trade.

Tom,

I agree. Keep JD at 3rd. No more prospect trades but especially Alvarez - way too much upside. Plus, you could always have the very under rated Guillorme go in for defense later in the game or even platoon Guillorme and Davis.

You wonder if Todd Frazier would take a minor league pact to be a depth piece. Syracuse is relatively close to NJ and it could lead to a position in baseball as a scout or coach down the road. It would sure beat trading a prospect like Stephen Villines again for a similar player next year.
