Mets Links:

SNY.TV: Mets target Tomoyuki Sugano reportedly lands in America to weigh final offers.

Tim Ryder Metsmerized Online: Tomoyuki Sugano Indecisive On Jump to MLB Due to COVID-19.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Steve Cohen free-agency anger is premature. “Cohen is unlikely to bid against himself for the top of the market without a clear sign he must… wanting to boost the farm system as an indicator the Mets will sign (at most) one from Springer, Bauer and LeMahieu…the compensation would be lost draft picks… Cohen shuns the remaining Big Three because, as opposed to art or this team, he does not think they will appreciate well with age. In that case, bet on him pivoting to something like signing Jackie Bradley Jr., Liam Hendriks, Jake Odorizzi and Sugano to meet his promise of a big-market payroll of $190 million-ish.”

Bob Raisman NY Daily News: The ice-cold hot stove is just one symptom of MLB’s serious problems. “How can any owner budget for the future, including player payrolls, when the suits don’t know how much revenue they will generate this season? TV baseball sources said “several teams” lost over $100 million in 2020. There is no guarantee those losses will subside in 2021. There’s a better chance the losses will grow…And if they somehow are able to sell tickets, if health officials allow them to play to 25% capacity, how many fans have any disposable income to spend on tickets?”

NY Daily News: Carlos Delgado on his charitable work in Puerto Rico, Carlos Beltran’s baseball future and the overuse of analytics in the game. On Carlos Beltran: “'good baseball man' who deserves a second chance to manage in the Big Leagues’”…on Analytic and Kids…”’I think we need to go back to the basics. Let kids play, have fun. You learn the game the right way, you’re going to enjoy it. And when you enjoy it, you’re going to be better.’”

Scott Ferguson Mets360: George Springer and the new Mets. “Without George Springer…the centerfield situation is still very much up in the air, with everyone agreeing that Brandon Nimmo isn’t the answer there moving forward, but is the current starter. Other options exist on both the trade market and in free agency, but they are a significant step down from Springer.”

Rising Apple: Five most valuable minor league deals this offseason.  #1 Jerry Blevins; #2: José Peraza; #3: Jerad Eickhoff; #4: Mallex Smith; #5: Arodys Vizcaíno.

Rising Apple: Will signing Trevor Bauer get in the way of other extensions?

A new decade for David Rodriguez - hope he didn’t leave all his hits were in the last one.

This Cano kid might be something someday.

John From Albany said...

Never saw David Rodriguez as an outfield possibility that was his third error out there this winter. Sure his team is glad to just keep his bat in lineup while he saves his legs for next year.

I'm confused about the rules for International signings.

I thought they can happen only after a certain date, and each team has a fixed amount (about $5 mil) allowed to spend each year.

Yet the Padres have already signed the Korean IF, and the Mets and others are pursuing Sugano.

Can anyone here explain the system to me.

Tom Brennan said...

Bill, I will leave that explanation to John.

John, any catcher knows the number of games before deteriorating from catching is finite.

John From Albany said...

Bill it has to do with the player's age and if they have played professional ball over seas.

Per MLB.com: "Foreign professionals -- defined as players who are at least 25 years of age and have played as a professional in a foreign league recognized by Major League Baseball for a minimum of six seasons -- maintain exemption from the international bonus pool."

bill metsiac said...

That sounds like the perfect explanation to me. Thanks again, John.

How does Yoelkis Cespedes' signing by the White Sox fit? He's 23.

John From Albany said...

Bill - Yoelkis Cespedes is considered part of the International Bonus Pool. He can't officially sign until January 15 when this year's International Signing Period begins. Usually it starts in July - they delayed it due to the pandemic and the fact that there were no minor league camps open.

bill metsiac said...

Didn't the White Sox sign him last week, or was that just a rumor?

John From Albany said...

They announced that they had agreed to terms but the deal can't be officially signed until the 15th.

bill metsiac said...

So you're allowed to agree to terms, and to announce them, with no regard for the restrictions on signing?

Why bother with having an "opening date" at all?

John From Albany said...

Bill you are now asking questions above my pay grade but you raise a good point.

Think the signing period is aimed to limit teams to a certain amount for a certain period so the big market teams don't gobble all the players.

John From Albany said...

And probably should have said "it was reported" and not "they announced". Don't think the White Six can announce it before the 15th.
