Outfield - Grant Richardson, Indiana

After not being selected in the 2020 five-round draft, Richardson returns following a torrid four-week stretch to start the year where he hit .424 with five home runs. He’s got excellent physicality along with all the peripheral tools to be successful and the hit tool and power combination should pay dividends come this spring. There’s excellent bat speed along with the physicality and strength to posit double dight home run upside. Throw in the rest of his tools in that he can run, throw, and defend and you have a very well-rounded prospect who should be one of the top hitters in the Big Ten.

Building upon an All Big-Team Freshman season in 2019 where he slashed .264/.335/.491, Richardson opened last season on a white-hot tear. After 15 games he was leading the conference in home runs (5), runs scored (21) and slugging percentage (.797). A cerebral hitter, he’s worked hard to ensure that he maintains a level swing path, an approach that allows him to stay in the swing plane as long as possible and backspin the ball to all fields. Additionally, he’s worked at rotating in a confined space, cutting down on his drift and, ultimately, his empty swings. He’s shown good instincts in centerfield, getting good jumps off the bat and using his straight-line speed to run down balls in either gap. In observing Richardson’s progression year-over-year, he’s displayed increased strike zone awareness over the summer and fall. Apart from being one of the more naturally gifted athletes on the team, Head Coach Jeff Mercer has lauded Richardson for his work ethic and leadership qualities. Like Barr, he enters the fall as a late Day Two/early Day Three draft candidate, but could improve his stock with another high-level production spring.
