8. Brandon Barriera

Left-Handed Pitcher, American Heritage HS

Barriera has some of the best stuff in the 2022 class, from the left side no less. It’s a stress-free operation with very little effort and seamless fluidity. Barriera throws a heavy sinker that's been up to 98 with significant arm speed and top-of-the-class athleticism on the mound. He sits 92-94 in late innings, though even that seems to be ticking up. He’s got a wipeout slider that tunnels the heater well, diving on right-handed hitters and disappearing for lefty bats. He’s shown good feel for a changeup with solid separation and depth. He’s also shown a cutter to lefties. It’s a bulldog mentality, filling up the strike zone and coming right at hitters with attitude. Just 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Barriera is still getting more and more physical as he matures into more strength.

 Week 1

Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage High, Plantation, Fla. (No. 20)

Barriera’s assignment was a tougher one than Ferris, given the lineup he had to navigate, and while he showed good pure stuff over three innings, the Vanderbilt commit did allow four hits and four earned runs while striking out five and walking two. He threw 62 pitches in this outing—58% for strikes.

Barriera throws with a loose and fluid arm action that’s whippy throughout his delivery. Despite a slight head whack, he finishes in a balanced position and fields his position well, with impressive athleticism.

In this outing, Barriera pitched in the 90-95 mph range and touched 96 mph in both the second and third innings.

 LHP BRANDON BARRIERA, AMERICAN HERITAGE

Even in an outing where he gets knocked around a bit, it’s hard not to fall in love with the potential of Brandon Barriera. Sitting mid-90s, touching 96 with the effort of playing catch and getting some consistent arm side run. Slider is a real separator as a plus pitch in the low-80s with sharp, horizontal movement and will tunnel extremely well off of the fastball. Excellent feel to spin and command of the breaker offer the ability for him to throw the pitch in any count. Flashed a changeup that gets good velocity separation and some fade that he will land for strikes. It’s a profile that organizations will fall in love with and there’s plenty more to project.

9. Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage HS (FL)

Barriera may be on the shorter side (he's listed at 5-foot-11), but scouts think he has one of the highest ceilings among this class's prep starters thanks to his athleticism and his fast arm. One evaluator estimated he has the potential to boast four average or better offerings at maturation, including a plus fastball and a sharp slider. Barriera will need to prove that his body and his stuff can hold up to a greater workload, thereby confirming that he's more than a "summer showcase pony," in one scout's parlance. If he does, he has a chance to be the first prep arm off the board come draft day, with his employer likely viewing him as a plausible mid-rotation arm.

Baseball America 2022 MLB Mock Draft Version 1.0

29. Rays — Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage HS, Plantation, Fla.

Scout’s take: Barriera lands in an organization known for developing young pitchers. The Rays are intrigued by young prospects with high ceilings and Barriera is a match. He is just turning 18 during this season, and will continue to grow into a stronger build. Barriera has a three-pitch mix, fastball-slider-changeup, released from the same slot with the same arm speed. He is very deceptive. A lot of Vanderbilt commits are off the board now. Obviously, there are some signability concerns.

Carlos’ take: Yep, based on our board this is pretty good value. Our mock to this point would also be a bummer for Vanderbilt and its fans, as Barriera is the fourth Vanderbilt commit we have selected—joining Jones, Lesko and Schultz. Man, it is terrifying to think about what that rotation could look like in a few years if even two of those pitchers made it to campus. Back to your Barriera pick though, I like it. Florida product going to a Tampa-based team that has a magic wand for pitchers, what’s not to like?

6. Brandon Barriera, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), LHP

The first left-handed pitcher taken could be Barriera. Although he did not pitch must last year, getting in about 16 innings, Barriera has continued to rise up recruit rankings since his sophomore season when he was pegged as the nation's top lefty. He has command of three pitches — a fastball, slider and change — and has topped out at 95 mph on the fastball.

Brandon Barriera

American Heritage HS, Plantation, Fla. LHP

Notes:

Ht: 5-11 | Wt: 171 | B-T: L-L

Commit/Drafted: Vanderbilt

Age At Draft: 18.4

A small and compact, 5-foot-11, 171-pound lefthander, Barriera isn’t the most physically projectable lefthander in the 2022 class, but he has electric arm speed and the stuff to match. He’s been up to the 95-96 mph range at peak and sat in the 92-93 mph range in short outings last summer. He throws a slider in the low to mid 80s as well and the pitch gets plus grades, with hard lateral movement and two-plane bite at its best. While he threw a changeup less frequently than his fastball/slider combination, scouts with history on him believe it’s a real weapon that he throws with fastball arm speed and could become an above-average offering. Barriera draws praise for his fiery and competitive demeanor on the mound. He’s committed to Vanderbilt.

12. Brandon Barriera

Left-Handed Pitcher, American Heritage HS

Simply put, Barriera has some of the best stuff in the 2022 class, from the left side no less. It’s a stress-free operation with very little effort and seamless fluidity. Barriera has been up to 97 with significant arm speed and athleticism on the mound. He sits 92-94 in late innings. He’s got a wipeout slider that tunnels the heater well, diving on right-handed hitters and disappearing for lefty bats. He’s shown good feel for a changeup with solid separation and depth. Brandon Barriera is one of the fiercest competitors you can find in the 2022 Draft. He's an incredible athlete on the mound and has the explosive arsenal from the left side to match. He's a first round pick..

11. New York Mets

Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage

Tom Tanous and Marc Tramuta haven’t shied away from “big stuff” high school arms in recent history and Barriera fits that profile to the T. There’s perhaps no better pure athlete on the bump than Barriera in this class, and he has the arsenal to match. A fastball up to 95 with an electric slider and the ability to turn over an above average changeup, Barriera has a lot of really good baseball ahead of him. It’s a bulldog mentality with a lengthy track record of performing against the best prep hitters in the country. Adding Barriera to a stable of Calvin Ziegler, Matt Allan and J.T. Ginn would make for an explosive future on the bump for the Mets. But with Jacob Berry on the board here,  he’s got to be taken into consideration as well.
