BRYCE HUBBART, FLORIDA STATE
Early on this year, Florida State southpaw Bryce Hubbart has been one of college baseball’s most dominant arms. He started his season off hot with a five-inning, 13-strikeout gem against James Madison and followed it up by striking out nine across six scoreless in a win over Samford a week later.
Hubbart and the Seminoles hosted California this weekend and, even though he gave up his first runs of the season, the draft eligible left-hander dominated yet again. Hubbart went 7 ⅔ innings, punching out 12 batters and walking just one. He did allow five hits and gave up a home run, but it was still an impressive performance by an arm that’s steadily ascending up draft boards in a weak college pitching class. Hubbart’s deceptiveness on the mound and his analytically friendly fastball help cover up a below-average velocity band. If he keeps pitching like this, Hubbart will make himself some money on draft day.

Hubbart followed up Messick’s performance by striking out a career-best 13 batters in five innings of work Saturday. He allowed just two hits and didn’t allow a single run or walk, while throwing just 75 pitches in a dominant showing that was thanks mostly to a fastball with outlier traits.
Hubbart didn’t throw a single pitch harder than 92 mph in this look, but the pitch generated a ridiculous number of whiffs and ugly swings above the strike zone. It’s his clear bread-and-butter offering and was so effective that he rarely went to any secondary offerings.

Hubbart turned in a strong season for Florida State this spring, where he posted a 3.80 ERA over 71 innings, with 94 strikeouts and 29 walks. He followed that up with one of the best pitching performances in the Cape, posting a 0.87 ERA over 31 innings, with 45 strikeouts (13.1 K/9) and eight walks (2.3 BB/9). Hubbart sits in the low 90s, but the pitch plays up thanks to good spin and solid control, and he also mixes in a mid-70s curveball and low-80s changeup that are both swing-and-miss pitches. He worked to develop a slider over the summer, where he ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Cape Cod League. Hubbart’s up-tempo delivery, over-the-top slot and spin profile allow his solid stuff to play up.

When it comes to Hubbart, it's all limbs. It's an extremely funky, loud delivery that he repeats well and creates a ton of deception. To his credit, Hubbart fills up the zone despite the unique operation. Primarily a 3-pitch guy (FB, CB, CH), Hubbart has begun to work in a slurvy slider with plenty of sweep and a touch more velocity than his deeper curveball. The fastball is generally 89-92, though he's been up to 96 and his athleticism, arm speed and levers suggest those gains are coming permanently. The whole package is nasty, deceptive, wonky and effective. That may turn off some old-school scouts that seek the prototype, which Hubbart most certainly is not.

One of the standouts of the Cape Cod League over the summer of 2021, the Florida State lefty was almost universally considered one of the top two or three pitching prospects on the circuit by evaluators. He showed an evolving pitch mix and a natural curiosity for the data and science behind pitching, often sneaking off to the scout sections behind home where trackman units are housed on the Cape. It’s this focus on the craft that has allowed Hubbart to flourish and in some ways use his physical shortcomings to his advantage.
The projected Saturday starter for the Seminoles, Hubbart will be one part of a three-headed monster in the Florida State rotation with teammates Parker Messick and Carson Montgomery.

Hubbart made a jump this summer in the Cape Cod League, establishing himself as one of the top collegiate arms for the draft. He checks a ton of boxes with an athletic delivery, a fastball that flirts with the mid-90s, and a four-pitch mix highlighted by a hammer 12/6 curveball. For most of his Seminole career he’s been inconsistent at times, both in terms of stuff and results, but with consistency and maintained stuff he could go in the top half of the first round. -JG

Hubbart has a fairly ordinary build at around 6'0-6'1 and 190 lbs. He's a plus athlete with some potential to add strength. His delivery is unique and funky. He repeated his mechanics at a high rate this summer and works up tempo with a longer arm action. Hubbart hides the ball well and his operation is very deceptive which ticks his stuff up a notch or two. This is an interesting case as we've seen other college lefties with this kind of profile do well on draft day. The profile is attractive and relatively "safe" but Hubbart also has the chance to project much higher as a pro with more velocity. There's a non-zero chance that Hubbart climbs his way inside the top 5 or so picks this summer.

Analysis: Hubbart also has a very intriguing SP profile based on his Punch distribution. He demonstrates an innate ability to miss bats and execute pitches as shown by the near even BB Score and Whiff Score. Hubbart also shows the potential to further develop his arsenal as his Whiff Score still has room to grow.

A guy like Hubbart concerns me - velocity on the low side - not tall - I just wonder if he is high first round athleteic caliber.
