Porter is a cold-weather arm that brings plenty of heat to the table. The fastball has been clocked as high as 99 MPH, casually sitting 93-95 with plenty of riding life. His best secondary is a changeup that's at least plus, though some evaluators already believe it projects plus-plus. He throws the cambio with serious conviction and parachute-like action in the upper-70’s with enormous separation from his heater. Metrically, it’s a strong offering showcasing optimal spin rates in the 1400 RPM range. He’s got an inconsistent slider that can be wicked at its best, though in most cases it's squarely average, generally in the low-80s. He’s also got a curveball in the mid-70’s to round out a full arsenal. It’s a strong, athletic 6-foot-3 build with broad shoulders and and long levers. Three-quarters delivery with explosive arm speed. Porter continues to show improved command and control as the body matures. Evaluators would love to see the breaking ball consistency improve as we approach July.
12. Brock Porter, RHP, St. Mary Prep (MI)
Porter is an electric righty with a commitment to Clemson that he won't need to honor. He's large (6-foot-3) and projectable, yet he's already capable of chucking his fastball into the upper-90s. In addition to the heat, Porter has a Bugs Bunny changeup that checks in more than a dozen ticks slower. (Scouts tend to have concerns when changeups feature too much separation, citing the possibility that big-league hitters can handle it in a way that amateurs cannot.) He also throws a pair of breaking balls, giving him a full arsenal. Porter has a long, whip-like arm action that will likely always limit him to zone-over-spot command, at best. One scout described him as "borderline wild" and warned that his relief risk is higher than what is commonly accepted. Even so, his upside is such that a team will gamble on him becoming a mid-rotation arm, with that window opening right around the middle of round one.

11. Mets* — Brock Porter, RHP, St. Mary Prep, Orchard Lake, Mich.
Scout’s take: The Mets have two picks, 11 and 14. I think they go with an infielder or pitcher here. Brock Porter’s stuff can be compared to Lesko’s repertoire. Porter’s ceiling is high. He projects to have a plus plus fastball, plus breaking ball and plus-plus changeup. Porter has a slender build on a tall frame which gives him plenty of room to fill. The question will be command as his delivery needs refinement. With a few injuries to first round college arms now, the Mets go with Porter. I think what's going to happen with their two picks is one of them is going to be a budget saver—but attempting to predict the future before the start of the season is what makes this fun.
Carlos’ take: I like that you are taking the prep righthanders and not me in this mock. I feel like I typically am the person taking that demographic because 1) I don’t ever have to deal with the actual risk of taking that profile and 2) I just love the upside these players offer every year. Like you said, Porter does a lot of what Lesko does and I have talked with some scouts who even prefer the power of his game and the consistency of his breaking ball over Lesko. It doesn’t seem to be the consensus opinion, but it is out there.

The top four players on the list figure to be high picks in the first round while the next six likely fill out the bottom of the first round. The second group is heavy with pitchers, topped by Porter. With a fastball in the mid-90s, Porter's best pitch might be his change. He can also get outs with his curve and he could continue to rise up the draft list to the top half.

Porter is the top prospect on a talented St. Mary Prep high school team and established himself as one of the top arms in the 2022 class last summer by showcasing an impressive mix of size, stuff and command. The 6-foot-3, 188-pound righthander pushed his fastball to 97 mph and sat in the 93-95 mph range in short stints over the showcase circuit and backed that heater up with two breaking balls and one of the best changeups in the class. The change has earned double-plus grades and features tremendous velocity separation from his fastball. It sits in the upper 70s and features tremendous arm-side fading action and he’s shown an impressive amount of feel for the pitch. It’s a weapon against both righthanders and lefthanders and regularly stymied some of the best prep hitters in the class last summer. There’s some length to Porter’s arm action, and he features a bit of tilt in his delivery, but scouts have generally liked his accuracy, even if they believe for now he’s more of a control-over-command pitcher. Porter’s still-projectable frame and arm speed should give him even more velocity in the future and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him touch 100 mph. While the Yankees have targeted bats early the past few years, they've also shown that they are willing to pull the trigger on a prep arm that tickles their fancy. The Bronx Bombers doled out a big over-slot bonus to Brock Selvidge in the 3rd round last year to secure the prep hurler they coveted. In this scenario, Brock Porter is too hard to ignore. Porter has the kind of arm speed that you simply cannot teach and the body and frame that looks well suited to handle a pro level workload. There's present fastball velocity into the mid 90s, touching 99, and his changeup is one of the best in the draft. He'll need to develop a better feel for spin and the breaking ball, but it’s plenty projectable and the Yankees are one of the premier organizations in terms of developing young arms. Porter's upside rivals just about any arm in this class and he represents a great value pick late in round 1.

Porter was a pitcher that I had going to the Mets earlier in the mock season, but he has been passed by others having standout seasons so far.
