BINGHAMTON, NY– The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (2-5) fell to the Bowie Baysox 6-2 on Jackie Robinson Day. Bowie has taken three of the first four games of the series at Mirabito Stadium.
The Baysox (4-3) got on the board via a solo home run from LF Toby Welk to leadoff the second. They would score again in each of the next three innings, highlighted by a three-run third. In the third, Joey Ortiz hit a two-run double to left and later in the frame JD Mundy’s RBI single to center made it 4-0 Bowie. After the Baysox added a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Mundy lined a solo homer over the right-field wall in the fifth to extend the visitors lead to 6-0.
The Ponies would score a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Luke Ritter. In the ninth, Jeremy Vasquez hit an RBI single to make it 6-2, but LHP Cameron Bishop would retire the next three hitters to close out the game. Bishop allowed one run over four innings in relief to earn his first save of the year.
Bowie starter Brandon Young (1-0) allowed one run on five hits over five frames to earn the win. Ponies starter Marcel Renteria (0-2) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits over three innings, walking five and striking out four.
The Ponies continue their series with the Baysox on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch at 1:05 PM on CBS Sports Radio 1360 and pregame coverage beginning at 12:50 PM.
Postgame Notes: Binghamton RHP Joe Zanghi pitched two perfect frames in relief with three strikeouts…Johneshwy Fargas and Vasquez each had multi-hit games…Vasquez has driven in a run in the ninth in back-to-back games…both teams left nine men on base…the Ponies have dropped their last three games.
