PORTLAND, ME – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (4-7) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 12-5 on Thursday night in Portland as 1B Hudson Potts went 4-5 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored.
After the Ponies had tied the game at five on a two-run homer by Jeremy Vasquez in the top of the sixth, Portland (6-6) scored seven unanswered runs over their final three innings at the plate. The Sea Dogs scored at least one run in seven of the eight innings they hit in.
Portland hit three homers on the night. Potts, who came into the game hitting .045, launched a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fourth and tie the game at three. He added a two-run double in the fifth that put the Sea Dogs up 5-3 and padded the lead in the eighth with another two-run shot to left-center that made it 12-5. SS Christian Koss also hit a three-run shot over the high wall in left that made it 10-5.
Willy Taveras (0-1) took the loss in relief for Binghamton while Portland starter Victor Santos (2-1) earned the win as he allowed five runs over six.
In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded and two out, Portland DH Tyreque Reed was hit by a pitch by Binghamton starter Marcel Renteria to force home a run and cut the Ponies lead to 3-2. Reed charged at Renteria leading to the benches clearing which led to Reed’s ejection from the game.
The two teams continue their series on Friday night with first pitch at 6PM and pregame coverage starting at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
Postgame Notes: Jake Mangum hit a two-run triple in the third…Antoine Duplantis also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly…Vasquez two-run shot was his first home run of the year.
