BINGHAMTON, NY – Jake Mangum’s two run homerun capped off eight unanswered runs as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (3-5) rallied to defeat the Bowie Baysox 9-6 on Easter Sunday at Mirabito Stadium.
Timely two out hitting propelled the Ponies in shrinking a 6-1 Bowie lead to 6-5 in the fifth inning as Mangum hit a two run double to left field and Francisco Alvarez wrapped a two run home run around the right field pole. Alvarez now has four homers and 10 RBI’s in six games at the AA level.
The Ponies tied the game on a throwing error on a double steal in the sixth and took a 7-6 lead on Luke Ritter’s two out RBI single in the seventh, scoring Alvarez who had led off the inning with a double off the left field wall. Ritter also had a solo homer in the second, his second of the year.
The Ponies bullpen did not allow a run after the fourth inning. From the fifth inning forward, Alex Valverde, Brian Metoyer, Yeizo Campos and Bryce Montes De Oca combined for five scoreless frames. Metoyer (1-0) got the win pitching a scoreless seventh, striking out three.
Bowie (4-4) hit three home runs on the afternoon including a three-run shot off the bat of Shayne Fontana, which opened the scoring in the second. Jordan Westburg and Andrew Daschbach also added solo homers.
The two teams combined for six home runs on the afternoon while also combining for 15 runs and 19 hits.
The Rumble Ponies will hit the road for a six-game series at Hadlock Field against the Portland Sea Dogs beginning Tuesday night at 6:00 PM Pregame coverage begins on Newsradio 1290 WNBF at 5:45 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Alvarez had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI…Mangum was 2-5 with two runs scored and three RBI…Zach Ashford now has a hit in three straight games.
