BINGHAMTON, NY– The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (2-2), led by four homers including Francisco Alvarez third homer in as many games, routed the Bowie Baysox 9-4 in the 2022 home opener Tuesday night.
Alvarez three-run homer as part of a five-run seventh made it 7-2 Binghamton. Ronny Mauricio also had three RBI, including a two-run double in the first to put Binghamton up 2-1. He tacked on a solo homer in the sixth, his first of the year. Brett Baty also finished 3-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.
The Ponies were on a power surge all night as Antoine Duplantis hit a solo homer in the second, his first of the year. The big inning though was the seventh. With the Ponies ahead 4-2, Duplantis and Jake Mangum drew walks to begin the frame, setting up Alvarez. After taking a big swing and miss on the first pitch he saw, Alvarez didn’t miss on the second one, blasting a homer deep over the left-field wall. Alvarez also hit a long single off the wall in the first and finished the night 2-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. The 20-year-old is now hitting .538 (7-13) in his first three games at Double-A with three homers and seven RBI.
The seventh continued with a Baty double and two batters after that Ponies second basemen Luke Ritter hit a two-run shot to left-centerfield to make it 9-2 Ponies, his first of the season.
Alec Kisena (1-0) was the first Ponies starter to earn a win this year allowing only one run over five innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Bowie (1-3) starter Zach Peek took the loss (0-1) allowing three runs over five.
The Ponies continue their six-game homestand with the Baysox on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 PM with pregame coverage getting underway at 6:20.
Postgame Notes: Duplantis finished 1-2 with two runs scored and two walks…Bowie LF Hudson Haskin finished 2-4 and 1B Andrew Daschbach hit his first home run of the year in the seventh.

Great opener last night for the Rumble Ponies. The prospects stated their case, including a first inning trio of line drives hit off the wall - Alvarez, Baty, and Mauricio in order.
Other highlights included Mauricio swiping second base so quickly that the catcher couldn't even get off a throw and Brett Baty sprinting into the outfield to make an over-the-head catch that would have made Randy Moss proud.
Mauricio tried an over-the-head bare hander later in the game, but wasn't able to snag it. Former Mets David Wright or Kevin Mitchell may have to consult with him on how to make that grab. :)
I just want to make sure we bubble wrap Alvarez because McCan't can't and wow can you imagine if Megill can keep it up and we add Alverez behind the plate with Jake back in June it blows the mind. Now I know it's the Mets and of course anything can happen but I can dream can't I. Also are they playing this well in 40 degree weather?
Paul and Gary, they are a dream trio - may all our dreams come true.
