. The Mack Report - Friday, July 1st

A thought on Jacob deGrom.

Ex-Mack’s Mets contributor, Christopher Soto, put up a great analysis on Twitter this week that showed the timeline of Jake’s upcoming rehab schedule. Chris determined that deGrom would be ready to return to Flushing at the end of July.

This would leave him to have only 4-5 regular season starts this season.

Is this enough time for him to consider an opt out at the end of the season? Would another team think they can keep him on the field more than the Mets have? Should we go ahead and extend him? What about a QO?

I stand by what I said all season.

We will not see him pitch a single inning this season.

Your thoughts?

Me?  This is the Mets version of a David Wright that throws a 100 mph fastball. He simply can not stay on the field.

-IF Kramer Robertson was claimed off waivers by New York from Atlanta, optioned from New York, and added to the Syracuse roster today.

The 27-year old infielder plays all three infield positions and has a 2022 stat line for St. Louis of -0.2-WAR, .000 in one at bat.

Was drafted in the 4th round of the 2017 draft by St. Louis, out of LSU. He also played for two AAA teams this year (Memphis, Gwinnett), hitting a combined .242, with 6-HR.

Continuing our series of looking for expiring contracts on teams out of the race, next up is the Chicago Cubs.

LHP Wade Miley has produced a 2022 stat line of 0.6-WAR, 1-0, 2.84, in 4-starts. He is currently fighting to come back from injuries this season and tried to pitch in June 10th, but was removed throwing three scoreless innings against the Yankees with new left shoulder soreness.

He remains part of the 26-man Cubs squad.

Miley is currently being paid $10mil for the 2022 season.

C Willson Contreras has been one of the more productive catcher bats in the league this season. His current 2022 stat line is 2.6-WAR,235-AB, 12-HR, .272.

Contreras is currently being paid $9.625mil for the 2022 season.

RHRP David Robinson has been one of the Cubs most productive relievers this season. His current 2022 stat line is 1.5-WAR, 2-0, 1.86, in 26-appearances, with 39-K in 29-IP.

Robinson is currently being paid $3.5mil for the 2022 season.

LHP Daniel Norris is currently -0.8-WAR, 0-4, 7.24-ERA

RHP Robert Gsellman is… well… Robert Gsellman.

A darkhorse candidate for the Mets picking either with the 1.11 or 1.14 pick would be Oklahoma 6-2/190 RHSP Cade Horton.

Horton has really come on strong due to dominating outings during the College World Series tournament.

MLB.com says this about Horton:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 65 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

One of the top two-way prospects and two-sport talents in the 2020 high school class as a right-hander/shortstop/quarterback, Horton had second-round ability but went unselected because he was all but unsignable. He missed all of his first season at Oklahoma following Tommy John surgery in February 2021 before opening this year as the Sooners' starting third baseman and not taking the mound until March 29. After he finished the regular season with a 7.94 ERA, his stock soared when he logged a 2.61 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 31 innings over five postseason starts as Oklahoma finished second at the College World Series.

Horton's fastball velocity came back quickly but his life and command didn't, so his heater got hit until the playoffs, when he sat at 94-96 mph and topped out at 98 with improved armside run and carry. His biggest difference-maker was a slider that got much better after he toyed with trying to add a cutter before the Big 12 Conference tournament, giving him a wipeout breaking ball that parks in the mid-80s and reaches 90 mph with two-plane depth. It's an upgrade over his low-80s downer curveball.

Horton also dabbles with a fading changeup, though it's too firm in the upper 80s and he doesn't land it for strikes. A quality athlete who looked rusty but not out of place at third base for the Sooners, he pounded the zone with his fastball and slider during the postseason. He doesn't come with a long track record of college performance but his ceiling as a No. 2 or 3 starter could land him in the top 40 picks.

Horton’s final 2022 stat lie was:

14-G, 11-starts, 5-2, 4.86, 1.30, 53.2-IP, 64-K

Mack - I would love it if Horton was still around in the second round, but our first two picks are much more valuable than taking a chance on someone this spotty.

Thursday tweets -

Lowest ERA by a National League pitcher since May 12 (min. 50 IP):

Sandy Alcantara: 1.49

163 G, 156 H, 34 2B, 3B, 42 HR, 117 RBI, .375 OBP, .932 OPS, 148 wRC+

Among 350 minor league hitters with a min. 600 PAs since 2021, Álvarez owns the 7th-highest wRC+.

Mets off, Braves get flummoxed.

MINORS RESULTS:

St Lucie was up 13-2 headed to the 9th. Atencio 5 shutout innings, Consuegra 5 RBIs. Nice.

Binghamton got crushed but Mauricio, Alvarez, Baty and Cortes had fine nights.

Syracuse pulled out a 7-6 walk off win. Vientos hit his 13th. Fine inning each from Holderman and Orze.

Brooklyn got a 6 inning gem from Nick Zwack, and Brooklyn, despite being 4 hit, won the game 6-1. Newton knocked in 3, Palmer cracked his 7th.

Really disappointed about the all-star voting finalists. Other than Pete and Starling Marte, the Mets came up empty. Meanwhile the entire Braves lineup seems to have made it.
Happy Bonilla day!

It’s just an exhibition game!

I stopped following the voting years ago because of this.

The players should be voted by the 30 managers.

The Mets need to fix their hitting problems - nearly 40% of the season and catchers hitting .195, and Dom Smith too.

Smith is an enigma - his .185 and ZERO HRs are simply a failure from a power position player.

deGrom better pitch for us, otherwise I want zero part of him. He capsized 2021, he better not do it to 2022 as well.

I'm starting to think that bringing up Vientos or Alvy to DH may not be a bad thing.

Mack Ade said...

I'm telling ya.

He'll throw as hard as he can in a rehab.start and will be right back on the IL.

How about:

Dom Smith and JD Davis

For

David Robertson and Willson Contreras

Might as well deal those 2 for Trout and Ohtani.😅

Why would the Cubs do it? And why would the Mets want a rental Catcher who would start from scratch in terms of learning our pitchers?

Smith/Davis, possibly plus a decent prospect, for Robertson and a #3-type SP or long reliever?

1. They are both free agents and will not sign with the Cubs next season.

2. Mets can negotiate with them for extension while they are playing for us.

3. I'm not trading for Contreras to catch. I want him as my DH going forward

Tom my offer still stands either I pick u up or u pick me up and we'll drive Dom to Bingo as I'm sure he'll have alot of interesting stories to tell us during the trip and we'll pick up the Beast and how about Blanks as well because gosh darn it he deserves it. How about we split the gas cost sound good?
