OF, Bats Left, Throws Left, DOB 7/31/1996; Drafted: 2015 June Amateur Draft - Round: 1, Pick: 23, Overall: 23, Team: St. Louis Cardinals. All three Minor League Options remain. Signed by the Mets in late November 2021 to a Major League contract and placed on the Mets 40 Man Roster.
Nick was the Cardinals first round pick in the 2015 draft. Soon he was drafted he was injured.
Baseball America: "Pain in his right wrist required his hamate bone to be removed, and a short time later he had the cartilage repaired in the same wrist...When the cast came off his right wrist and he saw his healthy, surgically rebuilt wrist for the first time in more than a month, Nick Plummer thought something didn’t look right. 'My arm—it was half the size,' he said. 'I was shocked.'...The size to which his forearm shrank as the muscles atrophied reminded the 2015 first-rounder how far he had to go to regain his strength, regain his swing and regain his place in the organization after missing the entire 2016 season."
In wasn't until 2021 in Double A Springfield that Nick started to show the skills that made him a #1 draft pick slashing .283/.404/.489 with 13 HRs, 46 RBIs in 90 games. That got him promoted to AAA where he hit .267/.455//440 in 27 games with 2 HRs, 8 RBIS.
He showed a great ability to get on base and hit with power to the opposite field.
Still, the Cardinals decided to let him go as a 7 year minor league free agent and not add him to their 40 man roster. That is where the Mets signed him to a Major League deal. It sort of the same type of gamble they took last off season with Pitcher Sam McWilliams. It gives them a depth option with 3 minor league options. They will not have to place him on waivers to send him to Syracuse as long as he remains on the 40 man roster.
We will see in 2022 if this gamble pays off.

To me, Plummer is darkhorse material
Very interesting story after battling years of injury - he turned the corner in 2021. Can he keep it going in 2022?
John thank you for introducing us to our newest prospect. Several things jump out at me when I examine his stats and view all the great videos in the article:
1. His OBP is very “Khalil Lee” like. He has a .400+ OBP in both levels and equally against righties and lefties. So, that doesn’t look to be a mirage.
2. His interviews were impressive. Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew were some players that impressed me as a youngster because they were good and smart. Plummer has the “smart” part, time to get the “good” part taken care of.
3. His power is huge. Pulling homers is nice, but many players do that. Hitting them out the opposite way is kind of like Conforto, showing above average pop.
How will these kids get a chance with Canha, Nimmo, and Marte already out there? Then, you have Lee, Plummer, Vientos, and Smith looking for at bats out there. More reason either Smith or Alonso needs to be moved. After this group, Baty and Mangum will be hopefully looking for at bats. Fingers crossed… I hope being on the 40 man doesn’t retard his progress all over agin when the MLBPA’s and MLB’s fighting hyjacks the season. I, too, have him as the ninth best prospect.
Plummer made huge strides in 2021 and is truly a Khalil Lee clone. Including the strikeouts. Hopefully, he comes to camp BETTER and is ready for when the opportunity with the Mets presents itself.
