Background: 

Brain Metoyer. Relief Pitcher, Bats Right, Throws Right, 6'3", DOB 11/13/1996, Drafted by the New York Mets in the 2018 June Amateur Draft - Round: 40, Pick: 6, Overall: 1190 from Louisiana State University of Alexandria (Alexandria, LA). Eligible for the Major League version of the 2021/22 Rule 5 draft (currently postponed due to the lockout).

Not too often can teams get a pitching prospect with as much potential in the 40th round.

Per KALB.com: When drafted Brian was the first LSUA player ever to hear name in MLB Draft. "Mets fans watching Metoyer as he comes up the ranks can expect him to immediately throw a 93-94 MPH fastball that can touch 97 MPH, a breaking ball that runs 79-81 MPH with good depth, and a change-up that ranges from 86-89 MPH. The scouts were also excited about the potential for continued growth by Metoyer, both physically and in the game of baseball."

Brian appeared in 12 games in the Gulf Coast League and Kingsport in 2018, then just 16 games in Brooklyn in 2019 as he spent time on the injured list.  

In 2021, he again spent time on the injured list, but after 21 games in Brooklyn, was promoted to AA Binghamton and received one of the few invites to the Arizona Fall League.

Per FANGRAPHS, Between Brooklyn and Binghamton, Brian had a 36.1% Strikeout to Batters faced (K%).  In April 2021, they rated Brian as a "Depth Arm" saying: "Metoyer has a breaking ball with elite spin."

Since signing, in 77 minor league innings, Brian has allowed just 6 Home Runs. 

Brooklyn Manager Ed Blankmeyer stated this about Brian in a 2021 interview: "Brian has come off an injury.  He’s been electric and everything is spot on.  We are just cautious with him and making sure he gets the proper rest but he’s performed extremely well – just a little more trust in his off speed stuff and I think he can be a special talent." 

Tom Brennan Mack's Mets had Brian as his #17 Mets Prospect saying: "former 40th rounder was almost unhittable in relief with tons of Ks. Throws HARD, control improving. Pitching in the offense-stacked Arizona Fall League, a few bad outings, and a few good outings so far.  Is the Mets' pen too hard to imagine for Brian later in 2022?  Needs to conquer AA and AAA first.  He needs to show me he is better than a former Mets pitcher with similarities, Akeel Morris."

Brian's best pitch is his curveball.  In the recent Mets in the Morning interview with Josh Lewin, Brian stated how he was trying to work on his changeup to compliment it.  While he threw as high as 97 in College, his fastball was mostly clocked at low to mid-90's last year.  

If he stays with the Mets after the Rule 5 draft, look for Brian to possibly start in Binghamton in 2022 with a quick promotion to Syracuse where he very possibly could see a call up to Flushing.

Metoyer seems to have a repertoire much like fellow former 30+ rounder Seth Lugo. Similar velocity and breaking ball spin.

Hard I think, though, for a team to grab him in Rule 5 if they have to keep him on the MLB roster for a year - I think his Arizona struggles shows he needs another half to full season of refinement to be ready.

I think he will be safe from the Rule 5 but you never know. A team that needs pitching could take a chance.

John, I think his walks are just too high for another team to grab him right now. Time will tell.
