Who Won: A series to discuss Mets trades through the years
The series will be posted every Tuesday and Thursday for the next few weeks. The current plan is to post individual years back through 2015, then start combining years as we go back into the archives. Don’t worry, we’ll get to Amos Otis for Joe Foy in a bit.
Year 2: November 2019 through October 2020
Moving back to the last year of the Wilpon regime and after a very good second half 2019 season, the team did not do much trading to try to improve on their 86 win season, swinging only one offseason deal.
(1) New York Mets traded Blake Taylor and
Kenedy Corona to the Houston Astros for Jake Marisnick.
And as Covid took over the season things came to a halt until they made four August trades, two at the August 31 deadline as they were still in the short season 60 game race at that point.
(2) New York Mets traded Jordan Humphreys to the San Francisco Giants for Billy Hamilton.
(3) New York Mets traded Steve Villines to the Texas Rangers for Ariel Jurado.
(4) New York Mets traded Ryder Ryan to the Texas Rangers for Todd Frazier.
(5) New York Mets traded Kevin Smith to the Baltimore Orioles for Miguel Castro.
Who Won?

It appears the Mets got robbed on the Marisnick trade. It would be nice to have lefty Blake Taylor available as a bullpen option. He has a good start to his career in Houston.
Trades 2-3-4 are inconsequential from both perspectives. Many people thought giving up Jordan Humphreys for Billy Hamilton was a huge mistake at the time, but he has not done much other than be DFA'ed and traded a couple times since. Villines may turn out to the the best of the bunch from this set.
At this point, the Mets have the upper hand in the Castro trade, but Smith is still progressing through the Orioles system. His 2021 AAA number were not strong.
Overall the 2020 trading season was not particularly noteworthy.

Rest - so far no pain.
Thus far for the Mets Miguel Castro is 4-6 over parts of two seasons with a 3.52 ERA. Relievers who pitch at that level of competency usually earn in the multi-millions. Kevin Smith is turning 25 and has not yet hit the majors. I'd call that a win for the Mets.
Oddly, while I wanted to keep Blake Taylor, Marisnick was off to a very decent start in 2020 when he quickly got injured. Something that many Mets players do.
Kevin Smith, who got favorable press here prior to that trade to Baltimore, gave up a huge 14 HRs in 56 innings in AAA this past season for the Os farm system. Not a positive result. Many guys seem to hit that AAA wall and experience turbulence. That said, the Orioles sure wouldn't mind him becoming a useful pitcher for them. He is still their #14 prospect, so I guess there is some hope he will rebound for them.
