Sporting News Top 50 Prospects
Sporting News Top 50 baseball prospects:
8. Daniel Murphy, 2B/OF, New York Mets. Murphy performed well in left field during a late-season call-up, but second base may be a better fit for the Mets' needs. After hitting .313 in his short big-league stint, Murphy was one of the stars of the Arizona Fall League, where he showed great plate discipline and an above average glove at second. Murphy doesn't have much power, but he has a great approach, superb pitch recognition and tremendous bat control.
40. Fernando Martinez, OF, New York Mets. Martinez is a top talent but his impact in 2009 is hard to gauge. Despite plus bat speed and great hands, he has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. If Martinez can stay healthy, he could realize his potential and eventually win a big-league job.
43. Jonathon Niese, SP, New York Mets. The Mets' rotation could have at least one open slot and Niese is the best internal candidate for the job. While he's not overpowering, Niese has three effective pitches and is learning how to mix his offerings and set up hitters.

"above average glove" at second base? as a former resident of binghampton who saw daniel murphy play often, i would like to know what stats you're referring to when you give a kid who committed almost an error a week at 3b the label "above average glove." from what i read in other reports from scouts, they weren't high on his defense either.
sorry mack, i just realized this wasn't your comment but sporting news'. but i think toby hyde on mets minor league blog commented on daniel murphy's defense as being suspect in the afl after he had made a couple of errors at 2b.
honestly, i'm really not into the hype for this kid. i wish we would just sign abreu for LF, place murphy in AAA and work him at 1b to be delgado's replacement. or, if there's no room for him trade him with one of the plethora of outfielders we got this offseason with a low end pitching prospect for a right handed LFer.

I'm not referring to any stats...
This is a reprint of a story from Sports Illustrated, the people that gave you the A-Rod fiasco...

No problem Paul...
Frankly, 100% of the people I have talked to over the past 2 years all agree that Murphy is from hunger on second...
