C.C.Y asked : Hi Mack, I am responding to the Q&A link on the Macks Mets site. I understand the Mets signed Matz (Matz/Mets has a ring to it, no?), last night. Could you recap the Mets 2009 draft signings and who is playing where (saw Shields in Brooklyn the other night)?
Mack: Sure. Here are the picks that signed, (linked to http://www.nyfs.com/ ) where they were assigned to:
2, 72: Steven Matz, LHP, Ward Melville HS, R/L, 6'2", 192, 5/29/91 (signed 8-17; not assigned yet)
13, 404: Zachary Dotson, LHP, Effingham County HS, L/L, 6'1", 180, 10/30/90 (signed 8-17; not assigned)
39, 1184: Taylor Whitenton, RHP, Darton Col, R/R, 6'3", 190, 2/20/88 (not assigned)
Phil asked: "Is it true the average of a ball player on the Buffalo Bisons team is 28??"
Mack: No, it is not. It is 28.4 years.
Swimmer asked: My question for you is who do you feel we can get if we trade Billy Wagner. Would it be smarter just holding him until the offseason? What are your thoughts on Putz.
Mack: By now, the Mets know what direction to go in 2010. The 2009 season is history and it will be interesting to see if they trade for prospects or veterans with existing contracts that can fill vital positions in 2010.
If you don't trade Wagner, you get a decent draft pick, but that player wouldn't help you for 3-4 years. The Mets need help now especially for an established SP2, a full time outfielder, a full time catcher, and a first baseman for one year.
Regarding Putz, that's an economy call. If he wasn't hurt this year, and pitched in the 2.50 ERA range, there would be no question he was a keeper. How many of his bad outings were due to the injury? He's a great pitcher and there's no one out there better than him for an 8th inning role. I would keep him if the Mets can afford to.
The shame is there basically is no value now for Livan Hernandez and Tim Redding, and Oliver Perez is the new Bobby Bonilla.

Your response is why it is time to move on and cut Omar Minaya loose. Each ofseason he proves he is willing ti bid against himself and that his talent evaluation skills are very much hit and miss. Kevin Towers as GM and Bobby V. as manager.
your lips to...
I think one of the many issues is, how much power does Omar Minaya, or any GM of the Mets actually have? I remember for a while there was this issue of "full autonomy" that Omar and the media kept spouting off about. But, will any GM of the Mets have full autonomy, even if Omar is let go?
This issue goes back to ownership, and what their role is in the front office. If ownership has too large of a role, we can all complain as much as we want but the only way to change things would be to stop going to games, buying Mets merchandise, etc. Changing the GM would not help.
That said, I am not sure if the Wilpons are the problem, but I would have no problem is Omar is let go.
Mack, classic line about Oliver Perez being the new Bobby Bonilla. Only I think Bonilla may have had more value than Perez does now.
Now that I have thought about it a little more, is it possible that Omar activated and Wagner pitched last night because the Mets knew that a waiver claim had already been placed?
