B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

For the second straight game, the B-Mets blew a
ninth inning lead. This time a two-run lead in the ninth inning
Sunday evaporated with Jose De La Torre on the mound,
leading to Connecticut’s 7-6 walk-off win. With one run already
home and two outs, pinch-hitter Tyler LaTorre lined a single
into center scoring the tying run, Mike McBryde, knotting the
score at six. Now with the winning run at second, Sharlon
Schoop grounded a single through the left side allowing Eddy
Martinez-Esteve to score the winning run. It was De La Torre’s
third blown save and second loss. Eric Niesen made the start
and surrendered three runs in five innings with four strikeouts
to take a no-decision. Salvador Paniagua had a big day with a
3-4 showing including a double and three RBIs. Mark Kiger
also enjoyed a three-hit day and drove in two runs. The B-Mets
jumped out to a 6-0 lead, only to see the Defenders score the
final seven runs unanswered.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Dylan Owen will make
his 22nd start of the year tonight for the B-Mets. He has recorded
decisions in four straight starts, including losses in his
last two. His last start came August 19 versus New Britain.
Owen allowed five earned runs on six hits over five innings
with six strikeouts. For the year, he is 4-9 with a 5.58 ERA in
113 innings. Owen is 2-7 with an 8.44 ERA in 12 starts at
home compared with a 2-2 mark and a 2.48 ERA in 9 road
starts. Last year, he tied for the Florida State League-lead with
12 wins with St. Lucie. Owen was the Mets’ 20th-round pick in
2007 out of Francis Marion University (SC).

LHP Jesse English is due to make his 19th start of the year
tonight. The lefty is a member of San Francisco’s 40-man
roster and has struggled with working deep in games due to
walks. He has made it out of the sixth inning only once in his
last six starts. Last time out, August 18 at New Hampshire,
English hurled 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, two earned,
and walked six men in a no-decision. He is 7-7 with a 3.76
ERA in 95.2 innings and has walked 53 men in the process.
Left-handed hitters are batting just .134 against English,
whereas righties hit .320. Last season, he made 26 starts for
San Jose (High-A) and recorded a career-best 13-7 record with
a 3.19 ERA in 135.1 innings. He was drafted in the sixth
round in 2002 out of Rancho Buena Vista High School (CA).

NO PLAYOFFS:

The B-Mets, who possess the worst record in
the Eastern League at 48-77, were officially eliminated from
playoff contention yesterday with their loss at Dodd Stadium
against Connecticut. Last season, the B-Mets finished four
games over .500 with a 73-69 mark. Binghamton has not
qualified for the postseason since 2004 when they finished
76-66 and lost nine straight games going into the playoffs
