The Herd:
After managing a total of one run in losing the first two games of the series, the Buffalo Bisons sprayed hits all around PNC Field on Monday night in a 7-2 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees before 5,717.
All nine starters in the Herd lineup took part in the 13-hit attack against Yankees starter Anthony Claggett (6-7) and his relief as Buffalo won for only the fourth time in 13 games against its International League North rival this season. Box score
The Bisons never trailed after Jason Dubois led off the second inning with his third home run of the season. In the fifth, the Herd scored three times, with Mike Lamb's two-run single the big hit in the inning.
Right-hander Lance Broadway (5-9) shut out the Yankees for five innings, limiting them to three singles.
In the sixth, however, Arturo Lopez relieved Broadway after a two-run single by Yurendell de Caster. Lopez struck out Eric Duncan, and, after a walk to Reegie Corona, got Chris Stewart to ground out.
The Bisons scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to rebuild a healthy lead. Nick Evans and Javier Castillo had RBI singles in the seventh and Argenis Reyes singled home a run in the eighth.
Eleven of Buffalo's 13 hits were singles

Gnats:
Age - Advantage Flores: At a year and a half younger than Beckham, Flores is playing the 2009 season as a 17-year old. Beckham is young for the league as well at 19, but Flores' moderate success in full season baseball is much more impressive than the raw numbers indicate.Bonus - Advantage Mets: With Flores receiving less than 15% of the bonus awarded to Beckham, the Mets have much less to lose should Flores not pan out. I've discussed Beckham's bonus in a previous piece, and simply don't see his being worth ten times what other shortstop prospects in the league have received.
Physical Projection - Advantage Flores: At 6'3", Flores has shed weight over the course of the season leaving what is essentially an empty canvas for the Mets organization to develop. At a listed 175 lbs., he's a player who can gain 30+ pounds on his way up the Mets organization ladder. Beckham, with his already fully developed lower body, doesn't have the frame to handle more weight. He may even be a guy who needs to redistribute some of the weight he has gained in his lower body to remain agile enough to man a position in the middle of the field.Maturity - Advantage Beckham: While Wilmer Flores' approach has improved leaps and bounds this season, Beckham handled his business as professional should. If one did not know who Beckham was, he or she would have had no idea Beckham was a former #1 overall pick from the way he carried himself on the field.Contact - Advantage Flores: At 17, a K% of 14.1% is pretty obscene. Beckham's K% sits a full ten points higher and he showed an inability to make solid contact versus breaking pitches when I watched him in person. Beckham's contact issues are correctable, but Flores' contact ability is simply uncanny for a player of his age who is still so raw.Power - Advantage Flores: At present, Beckham is showing more power than Flores. However, if you consider the age difference and Flores' room to fill out, power projection favors Flores considerably. Beckham may become a 12-15 home run player in the bigs, but Flores has the potential for 20+ or more annually.

Florida State League
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, St. Lucie
.412 (14-34), 8 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 4 BB, 9 SO, 0 SB, .971 SLG
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, the Mets' 2008 third-rounder, has found his power stroke lately. After hitting only one home run since late-July, Nieuwenhuis went yard twice on Tuesday, then once on Wednesday and once on Thursday. He combined for nine RBIs and six runs scored over those three games, and he's suddenly hit more home runs in August (five) than he has in any other month this season except May (six). On Saturday, he put on a 4-for-5 show, doubling twice and also tripling to knock in a pair of runs and score one.
New York-Penn League
Brandon Moore, Brooklyn
1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB,6 SO
Mets prospect Brandon Moore threw the first no-hitter of his career and in Brooklyn Cyclones history on Sunday. The 2008 draftee hit a batter and walked three, but Aberdeen hitters couldn't get wood on the ball all game. He struck out six in his second shutout of the season, and his 2.15 ERA is good for fourth in the league. Moore is also in the top 10 in the league in strikeouts and wins.
