The Future of Mets First Base:
Half Full:
Ike Davis – Davis will not play with the real Mets in ST and what happenes if the kid keeps hitting the snot off the ball? I’m sure Daniel Murphy will get the job out of camp, but look for Davis to be Queens bound around the all-star break. I hated this draft pick and I was wrong. Ike Davis is going to be a great Mets’ first baseman for a very long time.
Stephan Welsh – the Welsh story was interesting last year… he was lost as the 3rd firstbaseman with Savannah (.239 in 92-AB) and got bumped “up” to Lucy so he would get some field time as the backup… so what happens? .278/.350/.412/.762 in 216-AB, only 37-K. We may see him start 2010 back at Lucy again, but since there really is no one between him and Davis, send the boy up to Binghamton and let him freeze his mitt off…
Jeff Flagg – Jeff had an outstanding year for rookie-Kingsport, going .301/.365/.500/.865, 10-HR, 59-RBI, in only 226-AB. He ended the season with the Sand Gnats which is exactly where he will start the 2010 season. Love the body… 6-6, 246.
Half Empty:
All 374 guys at AAA other than Ike Davis: - I simply can’t understand these moves… the Mets throw away two top draft picks to Boston (go ahead and turn the deal down, offer Wags arbitration… he never was coming back) and pick up Chris Carter, one of the top pure hitters in all of minor league baseball… and then go out and sign two more AAAA guys to play in Buffalo… what the hey!!!
Eric Campbell – hit .248 for Savannah in 2009… only a .360 slugging percentage… not what you would call a template for a Mets first baseman. Welsh will probably play AA, Flagg will go to Lucy, and Sam Honeck is in line for Savannah. So, where do you play Campbell?
