Alfonzo Named St. Lucie Mets Manager For 2010

Port St. Lucie, FL – The St. Lucie Mets released their 2010 field staff today, naming Edgar Alfonzo as manager for the 2010 Florida State League season. Alfonzo managed the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League last year to a 65 – 72 record. Alfonzo began his managerial career in 2000 as manager for the Kingsport Mets. In 2001, Alfonzo managed the Brooklyn Cyclones in their inaugural season finishing with a 52 – 24 record and Co-Champions of the New York – Penn League, and was named Baseball America’s short-season Manager of the Year. He was a coach for the St. Lucie Mets in 2002 and served as hitting coach for the Binghamton Mets in 2003. After spending three seasons as the Mets Minor League Infield Coordinator, Alfonzo returned to Brooklyn as manager for two seasons, leading the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 47 – 28 record and a division title in 2008. Alfonzo played 12 seasons in the minor leagues with the Anaheim Angels and Baltimore Orioles organizations and is the older brother of former Mets infielder Edgardo.

Completing Alfonzo’s coaching staff will be pitching coach, Phil Regan, hitting coach, George Greer and coach, Jose Carreno. Regan returns to St. Lucie in his same role as 2009. Regan’s pitching staff compiled a 3.61 ERA with 955 strikeouts in 2009. Hitting coach, George Greer also returns to St. Lucie for his second season. Under Greer, the St. Lucie Mets were the fourth best offense in the FSL. In 2009 the Mets led the FSL in total bases, home runs and slugging percentage and were second in runs, RBI, and on-base percentage. Rounding out the coaching staff is Jose Carreno. Carreno joins the St. Lucie Mets after serving as a coach the past two seasons with the Savannah Sand Gnats. Trainer Matt Hunter returns for his second season with the St. Lucie Mets after spending three years as the Brooklyn Cyclones trainer from 2006 through 2008. Jake Henderson was named the strength coach for the 2010 season. Henderson spent the past two seasons with the Brooklyn Cyclones. Henderson graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science.

The St. Lucie Mets will open the 2010 season on the road at Roger Dean Stadium against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday, April 9, at 7:05PM.
