5/10/10

Binghamton 5, New Hampshire 3

From Press Release:

Dylan Owen worked six innings and allowed just a run on three hits to lead Binghamton to a 5-3 win over New Hampshire in the rubber match of the three-game set Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. He was making his second straight turn through the rotation for Eric Niesen, who is on the disabled list. Hector Pellot output a two-hit day, including a double, and drove in two runs to pace the offense.

Binghamton (18-12) scored first again on Sunday, rallying for two runs in the second with two outs. Carlos Guzman singled off starter Luis Perez to start the charge. Jon Malo followed with a double off the base of the wall in right to score Guzman all the way from first. Pellot chased home Malo with the final run of the inning on a double of his own down the line in right.

In the fourth, the B-Mets took advantage of a Perez error in the fourth to bring home another run. Marshall Hubbard reached on a groundball to first that was handled by David Cooper, but Perez dropped the feed at first allowing Hubbard to reach. After stealing second and moving to third on a groundout, Hubbard scored on Pellot’s RBI single to center, making it 3-0.

New Hampshire (19-11) finally got to Owen in the sixth. Darin Mastroianni tripled to the gap in right to lead off the frame, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. The next hitter, Adam Calderone, roped a sacrifice fly to center to plate Mastroianni, getting the Fisher Cats on the board.

The B-Mets scored some much needed insurance in the eighth. After southpaw Tim Collins struck out the first two hitters of the inning, Hubbard worked the count full before driving a homer over the fence in right to increase the lead to three. Collins walked the next two hitters before running into Malo, who grounded a single through the left side to plate Binghamton’s fifth run, upping the lead to four, 5-1.

The insurance proved important as reliever Josh Stinson, who had already worked two shutout innings, loaded the bases with one out on a pair of hits and a walk. Jose De La Torre was then summoned from the bullpen. The first hitter he faced, Jonathan Diaz, lined a single to left bringing the runs across to cut the Binghamton lead to two. Brian Jeroloman followed with a groundout to second that moved both runners into scoring position. With the tying run at second, De La Torre induced a groundout to first off the bat of Mastroianni to seal the win and nail down his first save.

Owen earned his second win with the terrific start. He allowed just a run on three hits, while walking one and striking out four. Perez was the loser despite hurling a quality start. The Fisher Cats lefty tossed six innings of three-run work.

In addition to Pellot, Malo and Lucas Duda produced two-hit afternoons. Malo’s day including a double and two RBI and Duda lined two singles off Perez, doubling his season-long hit total against lefties.

Binghamton now sits just a game back of New Hampshire for the Eastern League East lead and hits the road for seven straight. The trip begins Monday in Portland with a 6:00 PM game. RHP Brad Holt (0-2, 18.69) will go up against RHP Casey Kelly (0-2, 2.87). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 5:45 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
