5/31/10

Binghamton 5, Akron 2

From Press Release:

Nick Evans homered twice and Reese Havens smacked his first Double-A homer to power Binghamton past Akron 5-2 Sunday night in front of a terrific crowd of 5,054 fans at NYSEG Stadium. Evans now leads the team with 10 homers and drove in three runs to up his team-leading total to 32.

Josh Stinson made his starting debut for the B-Mets and impressed, retiring the first 10 men he faced to open the game. His streak ended with a one-out walk to Lonnie Chisenhall in the fourth. Chisenhall advanced to second on Jared Goedert’s groundout to short, moving him into scoring position with two outs. Matt McBride singled to move him to third and Beau Mills plated Chisenhall with a single to right, getting the Aeros on the board 1-0.

Binghamton (24-25) quickly responded in the fourth. Evans led off the inning with a single off starter Eric Berger. Eric Campbell followed with his second hit of the game, a double, putting two men in scoring position. After Reese Havens walked to fill the sacks, Mike Nickeas popped out to third and Carlos Guzman struck out looking. It appeared as though the B-Mets would squander their scoring opportunity, but Jose Coronado battled back from a 1-2 count to work a walk, forcing Evans across to tie the score.

Stinson, who was limited by a pitch count exited in the fifth after issuing a one-out walk to Tim Fedroff. The righty acquitted himself well, allowing a run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings. Manuel Alvarez followed him and offered up 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief for his first Double-A win.

In the fifth, Evans put Binghamton ahead for good. With two outs, he launched a monstrous solo homer to center to break the 1-1 deadlock, making it 2-1.

Berger exited after the fifth inning. The southpaw surrendered two runs on seven hits and walked four to take his fourth loss of the season.

Evans extended the lead to three in the seventh with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot to left-center off reliever Bryan Price. Two hitters later, Havens joined the home run parade with a solo blast to right-center, upping the lead to 5-1.
