SP1 Pelfrey, Fixing The Draft, Cliff Lee for ???:, Brad Holt, No Beltran... and Transactions

SP1 Pelfrey:

Betrayed by their allegiances, battered by a franchise forever leading the league in broken hearts, Mets fans tiptoed into the 2010 season terrified of their pitching staff. They were afraid Mike Pelfrey was not a credible No. 2 starter, and it turns out they were right. Mike Pelfrey is not a credible No. 2. He's a credible No. 1. Pelfrey has arrived as Johan Santana's equal and then some. He proved why Thursday night, when he didn't have his A-game against the Phillies and still shut them down for seven innings, still put them on the bus without a single Citi Field run to their name. - link

Fixing The Draft:

The draft is too long (50 rounds) and includes far too many high school players. Boras advocates holding two separate drafts: one for college players and one for high school players. He would limit the high school draft to two rounds, or about 70 picks if you add on compensation picks. Why just two rounds? His reason is based on years of data that show that after about 70 high school players are picked, the rest of them are glorified lottery tickets, many of whom will soon wash out of baseball and reenter the job market with no secondary education. Perhaps those kids should be encouraged to attend college or (as no doubt Boras might prefer) cut their own deals as free agents with major league clubs, perhaps for the chance to play with an affiliate close to home or one that offers a better opportunity for advancement. Think of it as a high school grad applying to colleges, rather than one college choosing the high school grad. - link

Cliff Lee for ???:

Fernando Martinez and Wilmer Flores are the Mets top two prospects, and current big-league reliever/future starter Jenrry Mejia may not be an asset GM Omar Minaya is willing to part with for a couple months of Lee. And, of course, the Mets have to stay in the race. They sit five back right now, but are in last place in the National League East. Other prospects that could become involved include catcher Josh Thole, second baseman Reese Havens, and lefty Brad Holt. Flores, however, may be the next gem of their organization and would be a steep price to pay considering the contractual parameters of the player coming back.- link

Brad Holt:

Brad Holt got one more shot at starting last night and he past the test. I remember talking to Rick Waits out on the back mounds about Holt in the spring of 2009 and he told me that the emphasis last year would be on creating secondary pitches for Holt. I left that day thinking his ERA would be up for 2009 (which it was) simply because you’re going to have to throw these new pitches during game time condiditons. Well, it hasn’t worked, and now Holt’s velocity on his fastball is in question. Listen, if you’re a one pitch pitcher, it better be a fastball… and if it’s a fastball, you’re a bullpen pitcher… and if you’re a one pitch fastball pitcher with lost velocity… well, you’re playing in the Central Park League.

No Beltran:

Based on Omar Minaya's timetable, Carlos Beltran is unlikely to rejoin the Mets before the All-Star break. Beltran has not yet begun full baseball activities, according to the general manager. Once he does, he will still need four to six weeks of rehabilitation before he can return to the active roster. Minaya said that team doctors will have the final say regarding Beltran.- link
