5/29/10

DRAFT: - Josh Spence, Brian Harrison, Marcus Littlewood, Seth Blair... and Austin Wilson

Josh Spence:
5-28 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/5/28/1491102/for-your-consideration-college#storyjump  - LHP, Arizona State: Deemed the 'Jamie Moyer of College Baseball', Spence has not pitched this season due to a nerve issue in his elbow. A third round pick by the Angels last year, his fastball barely registers on the grading scale, and yet has consistently put up shockingly surprising numbers at both Central Arizona JC and ASU. He routinely changes speeds, arm angles, and locations to frustrate hitters every time he takes the mound. There is talk that he could red shirt and return for another year for the Sun Devils, though.

Brian Harrison:

5-25 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/2010/05/25/2010-mlb-draft-top-30-college-third-base-prospects-30-21  - Top 30 College Third Base Prospects - 21. Furman JR 3B Brian Harrison - Harrison is a good, good player. Case in point, Harrison has a good arm, is a good defender, and has a good hit tool, with good power potential. He’s a really good athlete, perhaps too good to be “wasted” at third if there’s really a team out there willing to try him in centerfield as rumored. I wish he would have gotten more at bats on the Cape this past summer, but, as too often the case with Harrison, injuries limited his playing time. Get him healthy, get him a regular defensive home, and get a good, good player with starter upside past round ten. Good bargain. The relatively low ranking is more about the players ahead of him than the above-average (or, in other words, “good”) overall talent package that Harrison brings to the table.

Marcus Littlewood:

5-28 from: - http://www.baseballrumormill.com/2010/05/mlb-draft-notes-josh-sale-marcus-littlewood-and-more/#more  - "He's not going to play shortstop -- he's too big, he'll outgrow the position," the scout said of Littlewood's defensive future. "But he can play third -- and then it's (a question of) will he have the power. I think he might, I've seen him do it with the wood bat. What's that, Evan Longoria minus the (third base level) power? And a better defender, maybe, too."

Seth Blair

5-28 from: - http://baseballbeginnings.com/2010/05/28/seth-blair-report - PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Big body, durable frame, thick trunk, large hips and thighs. STRENGTHS: FB 89-94, averages 90-91, pitches with above-average command to both sides with above-average movement. Throws cutter variation. Knuckle-curve 78-81, trick pitch, above-average rotation and bite, deceptive power, doesn’t throw often against metal. Slider 78-81 (79) lacks power but has shape. Change-up 80-82 (80), average movement and command. Averge overall command and control. WEAKNESSES: Did not see put-away pro breaking ball. Uses FB as primary out pitch, likes to sink the baseball. Sometimes overthrows and loses front side. Shows sweeping arm action on CH, tips pitch. SUMMARY: Up-tempo attack artist with fastball. Influenced by Leake. Not afraid to pitch to contact. Should have arm power and aptitude to either bring knuckle-curve in more against wood or work on tightening up slider – not a factor that would make me not want to draft him. CH should become third pro pitch. Broad shoulders and chest, a workhorse warrior. Should be a solid pro. GRADES (Present/Future): Fastball 55/55 Curveball 50/50 Slider 40/50 Change 40/50 Control 50/50 Command 50/50 Overall Future Potential: 54

Austin Wilson:

5-28 from: - http://bleacherreport.com/tb/b4kdh  - Harvard-Westlake HS (Calif.): Big, strong and athletic, Wilson looks the part of a future, run-producing right fielder. He's got the power and the arm to profile extremely well there and he runs well for a guy his size. His work ethic and makeup are off the charts. The main issues with Wilson are that he's a little raw in his overall hitting approach and there are some concerns as to what it might take to sign him away from his Stanford commitment. Based on tools alone, he's a first-round-type player.
