After winning five straight games for the first time since 2007, the Herd's hot streak finally came to an end tonight. The Bisons lost for the first time since May 18 when they were defeated by the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 6-3 at Coca-Cola Park.
In his second start in Triple A action, starting pitcher Dylan Owen was only able to go five innings tonight. The Iron Pigs made Owen work in his five innings of work as he hurled 88 pitches in his short outing. Over his five innings, Owen gave up five hits and only allowed two runs to score. Owen also struck out five batters and made some batters look foolish with his curve ball which seemed to be on target all night.
After Owen left the Iron Pigs were able to jump on the Bisons bullpen. The Iron Pigs entered the bottom half of the sixth inning trailing by a run. Right fielder John Mayberry led off the inning with a single and would eventually score when first baseman Neil Sellers hit a double to left field to tie the game. Mayberry was the Bison killer on the night as he scored the game tying run in the sixth and belted a solo home run in the second inning.
After Mayberry scored, Sellers was eventually able to score when Bisons second baseman Andy Green was unable to field a routine ground ball and made a throwing error trying to get Iron Pig shortstop Brian Bocock out at first which would have ended the inning.
For the Herd, first baseman Mike Hessman started off the offense as he reached base on a single to left field and was eventually driven in by catcher J.R House in the second inning. Hessman once again proved his worth on the defensive side when he made a backhanded grab that robbed Mayberry of a hit in the fourth inning. On the other side of the plate, House was the offensive star for the Herd tonight as he went 2-4 with the RBI. Left fielder Mike Cervenak also went 2-4 with an RBI.
Hessman came to the plate again in the eighth inning with his team trailing by a run. Big Mike launched a 1-1 pitch to deep center field that appeared to have enough to clear the wall. Unfortunately the ball died at the warning track and was caught for an out. Hessman finished the night 1-4 and still leads the International League in home runs and RBI.
