LAST GAME: The B-Mets racked up their second shutout of the
season in spectacular fashion Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium
10-0 over Richmond. Eddie Kunz was impressive, outputting
his best career start. The converted reliever fired 7.2
innings of scoreless ball, allowed just four hits and struck out
five to win his fourth start. Eric Campbell ripped three hits and
drove in a team-high four runs to pace the offense. His tworun
single in the first started the scoring and his two-run double
in the sixth capped it. Kirk Nieuwenhuis enjoyed a return
to form as well, smashing three hits, including a two-run
homer in the fourth inning, which knocked Flying Squirrels
starter Craig Clark out of the game. Clark hurled 3.2 innings
and allowed five runs on five hits to drop his third game. Clint
Everts threw the final 1.1 innings in scoreless fashion to seal
the shutout.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Eric Niesen returns from
the Disabled List tonight to make his fifth start of the year. He
was knocked out of his last start after 1.1 innings April 23
versus New Hampshire after being hit in the head by a throw.
The lefty went on the DL April 26 and was 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA
in four starts spanning 14 innings. Niesen led all Mets minor
leaguers with 134 strikeouts in 2009. He was the Mets’ thirdround
choice in 2007 out of Wake Forest and is considered
the No. 24 prospect in the Mets farm system by Baseball
America.
RHP Mike MacDonald is making his ninth start of the season
tonight. The righty is coming of his worst start of the season
May 21 at Reading when he allowed six runs on nine hits over
four innings. For the season, he is 1-3 with a 3.35 ERA over
40.1 innings. MacDonald has walked just 11 and struck out
31. With Salt Lake City (AAA) in the Angels organization last
year, MacDonald went 8-13 with a 6.37 ERA in 30 appearances,
27 starts, spanning 147 innings. San Francisco signed
him as a minor league free agent January 4, 2010.
