LAST GAME: The B-Mets homered their way to a 5-2 win over
Akron, tying their team-high with three long balls. Nick Evans
accounted for a two of the shots, with a solo homer off starter
Eric Berger in the fifth and a two-run blast off Bryan Price in
the seventh. Reese Havens provided the other homer, a solo
job off Price in the seventh, which upped the lead to four. Josh
Stinson made his first start of the season and acquitted himself
well with 4.1 innings of one-run work. He allowed just two
hits and walked two. Manuel Alvarez bounced back from a
bad outing Saturday with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to
notch his first Double-A victory. Eric Campbell continued his
torrid stretch at the plate with three hits in four trips, including
a double. In total, Evans was 3-4 with three runs and three
RBI to power Binghamton’s offense. A day after blowing a sixrun
lead, the B-Mets bullpen surrendered just one run over
4.2 innings. Berger gave up two runs on seven hits over five
innings and walked four to drop his fourth decision.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Eric Niesen will make his
second start since returning from a month on the Disabled
List. He held Richmond hitless over 3.1 innings May 26 in a
no-decision. The lefty walked three and allowed an unearned
run in the brief start. On the year, Niesen is 0-2 with a 3.12
ERA in five starts spanning 17.1 innings. The southpaw led all
Mets minor leaguers with 134 strikeouts in 2009. He was the
Mets’ third-round choice in 2007 out of Wake Forest and is
considered the No. 24 prospect in the Mets farm system by
Baseball America.
LHP Kelvin De La Cruz gets the call for the Aeros in this afternoon’s
series finale. He dropped his last start despite allowing
just two runs on two hits over 4.2 innings May 26 versus Altoona.
The lefty has garnered decisions in all four of his starts
since joining the Aeros. De La Cruz is 1-3 with a 4.58 ERA over
19.2 innings with 12 walks. He opened the year in Kinston’s
(High-A) rotation and went 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA in six starts
spanning 34 innings. De La Cruz made just five starts last
year due to a strained ligament in his throwing elbow. He is
considered the No. 13 prospect in the Indians system by
Baseball America.
