5/30/10

Akron 11, Binghamton 10

Binghamton led 10-4 after seven innings, but watched that lead evaporate in a matter of two innings, eventually losing 11-10 to the Akron Aeros in front of 4,173 at NYSEG Stadium Saturday night. Carlos Guzman ripped a season-best four hits in five trips to the plate and drove in two runs to pace the B-Mets season-best, 17-hit attack.

Edgar Ramirez entered in the eighth inning with a six-run cushion to work with and proceeded to load the bases with three straight singles. After striking out Beau Mills and getting a shallow flyout from Carlos Rivero, Ramirez surrendered a bases-clearing double to Cord Phelps that brought the Aeros within three of the lead, 10-7.

Binghamton’s (23-25) meltdown continued in the ninth. Manuel Alvarez, who came on to notch the final out of the eighth for Ramirez, remained in the game in search of his first Double-A save. However, Damaso Espino led off the frame with a single and was joined on base when John Drennen doubled. Alvarez plated Espino with a wild pitch and was knocked out of the game after permitting an RBI single to Lonnie Chisenhall that shaved the lead to one.

Emary Frederick entered and gave up a double to Jared Goedert and hit Matt McBride with a pitch to load the bases. Mills followed and hit a comebacker to the mound which Frederick turned into a 1-2-3 double-play. Now one out away from an improbable save, Frederick got within a strike of putting the final nail in coffin, but Rivero blooped a single into right that scored two to give Akron (20-29) its only lead of the game, 11-10.

The B-Mets mounted a charge against Bryce Stowell in the ninth. With two outs, D.J. Wabick and Eric Campbell singled to reach. Reese Havens joined them on base with a walk. Unfortunately, Omir Santos grounded out to short with the tying and winning runs in scoring position sealing Binghamton’s fate. Santos is now 0-15 at the plate since joining the B-Mets earlier in the month.
The loss spoiled a decent start from Mike Antonini. The lefty tossed 5 1/3 innings of three-run work and was in line for the win until the feverish Aeros comeback. The B-Mets have lost the last five games that the southpaw has started.
