Ollie:
Even more painful than another bullpen collapse in an ugly game yesterday was another dreadful outing by Oliver Perez, who continues to mystify the Mets. The lefty gave up just two hits, but managed to walk seven and hit another in an awful outing that ended after 3 1/3 innings with him giving up three runs in the 6-5 loss to the Giants, snapping the Mets' nine-game home winning streak. And even though the Mets came back against Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco bullpen to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh only to see Jenrry Mejia give it up an inning later, the Mets know they have a problem with the woeful Perez. - link
Bryce Harper:
Bryce Harper went 5-for-12 this weekend with a 2B, 3B and 2 HR. He's now hitting .417/.509/.917 with 23 HR
Beltran Update:
Carlos Beltran isn't running yet, but this article from Christian Red gives us a picture of his brace and brings us news that he's had a Synvisc injection. The picture is the most telling. It's an Ossur CTi OA brace. (Oddly, it's not a custom brace, though I'm sure it was professionally fitted.) The brace is designed to stabilize the knee, reducing the effects of the arthritic changes inside his knee. Combined with the Synvisc, the doctors are attacking the grinding and the causes of the grinding at the same time. It's not permanent and not corrective, but gives him a chance to play. It appears that there's a hyperextension strap, though I can't be sure from that picture. Beltran is scheduled to run this week and his response to this is make or break, no pun intended. If his knee holds up, it's expected that Beltran's bat can remain productive. How they'll work him into the lineup remains to be seen. There's almost no chance that he'll be back in center field, but I'll leave it to the sharper knives on how the Mets could adjust. I'll remind everyone that if things go well, Beltran should be moved very quickly back to the Mets'lineup. - link
Fernando Martinez:
Martinez was taken out of the game on Sunday due to an injury. This new injury should not be confuse with his surgery due to repair a torn meniscus (7-16-09), a right thigh injury (12-13-09), a lower back strain (4-28-10), an injured thumb (5-22-06), a right elbow strain (2009 Carribean World Series), or a fractured wrist (2007). Up to this point, he had hit .244 for the season. More important, this is his fifth professional season and he has had only 1,187 official professional at bats. His lifetime minor league stats going into this season are an unimpressive: .281/.337/.445/.782 plus only 30-HRs and 132-AB is an amount of at-bats that averages around three full seasons.
