The Bisons' bullpen woes continued on Monday night in a 7-6 loss to the Louisville Bats from Louisville Slugger Field.
Luis Terrero's hit a three-run home run off of Bobby Parnell in the bottom of the seventh inning to send Buffalo to their fourth loss in the last five days. Parnell entered the game for Pat Misch with one out in the seventh inning. The southpaw starter allowed four runs on six hits but left with a 6-4 lead. Parnell walked Chris Burke on six pitches before Zack Cozart singled sharply to right on an 0-2 pitch. With the game-tying runs on base, Terrero jumped all over the first pitch he saw from Parnell and drove it to deep centerfield for his first home run of the season.
After allowing only 26 runs in April, Herd relievers have now yielded 34 runs in just nine games in May. The group has allowed 46 hits, six home runs and 14 walks in only 24.1 innings of work this month.
The Bisons had leads of 3-0, 5-3 and 6-4 but couldn't hold the advantage despite pounding out 15 hits. Mike Hessman and Chris Carter produced back-to-back doubles as part of a three-run first inning. Carter drove home another run in the fourth inning and Hessman doubled in his league-leading 35th run in the seventh.
Hessman and Carter have become the International League's top one-two punch. The duo holds the top spots in the league in both total bases and slugging percentage.
The Bisons also got three hits from Jesus Feliciano to raise his average to .349. Ruben Tejada was a perfect 4-4 at the plate. But the Bats matched the Bisons offense and kept pace long enough to spoil Misch's attempt at a third consecutive victory.
BISONS NOTES: Pat Misch also handled the bat quite well on Monday night, laying down three sacrifice bunts...The Bisons are now 0-5 on Mondays in 2010...Chris Carter extended his hit streak to 11 games. It ties Mike Cervenak as the longest stretch for a Bisons hitter this season.
