Zach Lutz, Beltran Update, Eric Campbell, Chris Carter... and Wood Bats

Zach Lutz:

Stock Up: Lutz is one of those minor leaguers that doesn’t seem to get any press, but just goes out and does his job every night. And, don’t be fooled by that baby face… the kid’s got some real power!

Lutz was a 5th round pick in 2007 and has produced well in Brooklyn (2008: .333/.442/.514/.956) and St. Lucie (2009: 11-HR, 62-RBI, .822-OPS).

The soon-to-be 24-year old (June 3) continues to develop power and currently leads the Eastern League in both home runs (8) but also the best HR-AB ratio (13.13).

ETA: 2011

Beltran Update:

Carlos Beltran (knee) has been cleared to begin light jogging. He's also allowed to do a few more baseball activities. Progress has been slow and frustrating for the 33-year-old Beltran, but he's slowly making his way toward live action. A mid-June return to the big leagues sounds about right. At that point, the Mets will have to decide what to do with Gary Matthews Jr. The smart move, of course, would be to cut him loose.- link

Eric Campbell:

Florida State League offensive player of the week - Eric Campbell 1B (Mets) - Eric is not going to replace the revered Ike Davis at first base, but a .565 average will impress someone. Surprisingly, he only had one RBI despite the high average. He is now hitting .327 for the year - link

Chris Carter:

Carter was called up by the Mets after Monday night’s loss. This looks like another in a series of youth moves that is reshaping the Mets 25-man. Carter is the main player the Mets got from Boston for Billy Wagner and may prove out as a decent long-term acquisition. He went lights out in ST and was putting up his fourth 1.000+ OPS numbers in AAA when the call came. The Mets have played a lot of tied games going into the late innings and the pinch hitting has been worst than miserable. Carter offers them a fresh bat that has incredible pop, plus he can spell Ike Davis at first and Jason Bay in left. Good move, Omar.

Wood Bats:

Multiple Conference Commissioners in Division II baseball are exploring the idea of introducing wood bats universally to their level of play in 2012. It seems that this season we have seen multiple incidents involving balls hit at the pitcher that have inflicted harm. Tommy Toledo of Florida was struck in the face with a line drive that required surgery and he is yet to return. Corey Williams of Vanderbilt was struck by a line drive on this now infamous play against the Gators, and the result was a broken kneecap and surgery. Also, Nick Capito of UCSB was struck in the face a few weeks back, but returned for his next scheduled start - link
